A few pleasant surprises in the woods today

We are finally tackling one of the last frontiers in our yard, which ironically is quite near the house but on a steep slope. Anyway, I spent the better part of the day removing multiflora rose, garlic mustard, vinca minor, honeysuckle and pachysandra from a good bit of it. And I must say, it's amazing how large a norway maple you can take out with loppers if you're determined :)

Did have some pleasant surprises buried in with the nasties. Lots of jack-in-the-pulpits, a beech tree, several black cherries, something that reminds me of a hazelnut but awaits more identification, and a bunch of elderberry! I've never noticed them, as buried in japanese honeysuckle and roses as they were - maybe with the competition removed, they'll start to spread. I can hope!
