Help we need an instant privacy tree screen! Neighbors ripped it out.

Our new (and lovely) neighbors ripped out the trees on their property line (not lovely) that have long served as a nice thick barrier between our two properties. We've already helped pay for them to plant new trees (Podocarpus) but they won't be tall enough to provide real privacy for at least 5 years. We have very limited space for planting for on our side and we are seeking instant privacy for their sake and ours. (We have a pool, a 4-year old and we like to play music.) What can we plant that is both narrow as to not encroach on our teeny tiny lawn and also TALL (hoping for 8 feet now and 15+ feet in the near future.) We are in Los Angeles, planting zone 10b. Thanks in advance for your advice!
