Viking Vent hood installation

We bought a used 48" Viking Gas Stove with Vent hood but Vent hood doesn't have a model # and we are not sure how to install or vent the hood for the 48" gas stove. Any ideas. Does it just need an outside vent. or both a roof and wall vent? So confusing. Any help is appreciated. Right now the house only has an outdoor vent through the side wall and we are not sure if that is enough

Congrats on the new appliances! It should just need an outside vent. The shorter and straighter the ductwork the better. A hood that size probably needs a very large duct - about 10 inch diameter round duct or similar. HOWEVER - building codes have changed in the past decade or so to factor in these oversized appliances. Large hoods draw a lot of air and suck the air down/backwards chimneys, furnace exhausts, etc, bringing carbon monoxide and other harmful gases back into the house. The code added that any hood over 400cfm must be connected to a make-up air duct that opens when the hood turns on and feeds air into the kitchen. Please consult a licensed mechanical contractor to install the hood and make up air system for your family's safety. I also highly recommend you have them get a permit and inspection to ensure proper work.

Does this hood have an internal blower?

(A) If not, I would recommend you purchase a 1000 CFM or greater nominal (zero static pressure) flow rate blower and decide whether to put it on an outside wall or on the roof, with a 10-inch duct between the hood and blower. The longer roof path may allow adding a silencer from Fantech. Selection will depend on house architecture and allocated cost.

(B) If supplied with blower, duct either path as described above without the external blower or silencer.

I am only guessing here, but suspect your existing wall vent will be too small for the blower you need to use so if you choose that direct option, some carpentry will be required.

Please dredge through the many hood threads here to gain insight into what your goals are and what the requirements are for good ventilation. Also note that a make-up air (MUA) system will be needed in most locations.

During our kitchen remodel a little over 2 years ago, I purchased a Viking island hood off of Ebay that did not have the blower. All the literature said to use the Viking blower but I determined that was for warranty purposes. Since I was not getting a warranty anyway and what really needs to be warranted on the actual hood anyway, I purchased an inline Fantech blower and silencer that is mounted away from the hood. The same model as yours just 900 cfm. I had no problem hooking it up to the electrical switch box in the hood and the controls and light work as designed. The only problem is that I am not sure you can get a Viking supplier to sell a Viking hood without their blower as it may violate rules of distribution, that is why I started to look on Ebay. Do not rule out looking for it on Ebay as I remember there were quite a few models always available when I was looking. I was surprised to find the island hood I needed, but lucked out and saved quite a bit off both the hood and going with Fantech.

Wolf or Viking?? Vent or no vent?

I personally prefer Wolf over Viking. I can't afford either at this time, but my parents have had both and I found that the Wolf was more precise. Although, you need to really compare the actual models you are considering- are you comparing apples to apples? Also, if you have to vent on an interior wall, can you go through the roof? If not, be sure to consider the vent VERY carefully b/c they vary extensively. Some are much quieter than others and if you are auditory, this will matter! Some also tend to be much easier to clean than others. Good luck and hope this helps!

The problem lies in that the person writing the instructions knows exactly what they (him/herself) mean.Seems instructions these days are not for the literate. I mean you read the instructions carefully and follow them point by point and and it just doesn't work. I have found MANY problems in that regard. What helps me sometimes is to try figure out what what they mean, not what is written. A trick if it can be pulled off.

Of course you can vent it through a flat roof. You probably have lots of other things venting through your roof already, plumbing stacks at a minimum. You just use a different vent cap than used with a sloped roof and treat the roof piercing differently. Somewhat similar to using B-Vent pipe for a hot water heater. Look at all the artificial chimneys used today with new construction to vent gas fireplaces. The tops of those are flat and the fireplace vents through them just fine. On the other hand venting through the wall shouldn't be a big deal either. Go up with a section of pipe, add a right angle bend and go through the wall. The vent cover that comes with the hood (or an optional vent cover extension if needed for extra height) covers everything.
