stackable washer-dryers - do they all suck?
Comments (17)Good quality stackable washers will not be that cheap. They'll all be front load. The old small combo single units are just as expensive as the front loaders and do about half of the laundry, half as well. The FIRST thing you should do is to get a plumber in there to give you an estimate for the water and drain connections. It won't be as cheap or easy as you think. Washers are required to have a 2" standpipe these days rather than the old 1 1/2". That's all the way to the main drain, which could be prohibitive to do depending on what the home's construction is. The reason is that most modern washers eject water rather rapidly, and can overflow the smaller pipe size. Also, if you are concerned about leaks, you should build the laundry closet (Make SURE there's actually enough clearance to connect things with a person as well as the units!) as a "wet room" with a floor drain. Like a giant shower pan with the washing machine sitting it int. You'll have to keep the trap wet to keep sewer gas out as regular maintenance and it's not a cheap choice to do it that way, but it is the SURE choice for someone who is concerned about leaks. Is there no space other than the tenant's that could be turned into a communal laundry room? A basement or garage? That would alleviate your mind on the leaks, and give you more space to put in the less expensive units....See MoreRecovering From Flood - Which Washer/Dryer to Buy?
Comments (2)Since no one else answered you I will give you my two cents worth. There are a few ASKO lovers here but they have older machines - the new ones are iffy and service is even more so. Same for the Mieles - older is better, new may not be so good. Way too much money for me. Their gas dryers are being recalled - not a biggy but quality may be an issue. Kenmore is not a brand, exactly. The top end FLs are Duets with a few more bells and whistles. The "new" Maytags are also Duets or Duet Sports - renamed to Maytag. Many of the horror stories with the mainstream machines are caused by unrealistic expectations, bad installation or operator error. My Duet Sport is 1 1/2 years old and I am very happy. There are many happy Duet owners here, also. You need to figure out what you need - price, size, capacity, special cycles, fancy colors, steam, location, etc. then go shopping. See what feels good to you, then buy it and learn how to use it properly. Be sure you can return it if you have vibration or other problems. Check to see if service is available in your area. Don't believe much of what the salespeople tell you. Good luck with your purchase....See MoreMiele 4842 washer and related dryer being discontinued
Comments (6)I believe Miele has a showroom in New York, so why not take one of your king size blankets and check the Little Giant's for size? That is what I did with my saddle pads and the people at Miele were very helpful. If money is not a major factor, and you have a lot of laundry, Miele also has some larger models in its Professional line. One of the Scottsdale dealers had a great deal on a floor model set, so you might be able to find a similar deal in your area. I do agree the other posters about giving yourself some flexibility in your layout....See MoreWhich Washer/Dryer should I buy?
Comments (4)I just purchased the front loading KENMORE ELITE HE5t series washer & dryer. I had the original KENMORE ELITE and a Maytag Neptune. I LOVED the upper dryer of my Maytag. It was huge but had the top "dryer" that worked perfectly for sweaters and delicates. After several repairs the bottom regular dryer was starting to cost too much to repair so I gave in and splurged on a new one. It took a lot of searching and I ended up with Kenmore's from Sears. The pedestal units work great with this new batch...they don't vibrate. There are a lot more choices for laundry, as well. The washer and dryer drums are huge. I am still in heaven with the fact that my dryer is keeping pace with my washing machine...the clothes are drying so nicely. I still miss my Maytag UPPER dryer...but am learning to hang clothing again....See Moretjmwine
