Help my Broccoli is under attack! Damage to underside of leaves!

Hello! I noticed damage to our small broccoli plants this evening and can't seem to identify what is happening! It looks to be some kind of damage (pest?) from the inside of the leaves. The leaf pictured has open areas but some of the others are still intact (meaning you can see the damage on the underside but there is a thin "veil" over the areas still). It is causing the leaves to curl and deform. Perhaps it is some sort of leaf miner? I couldn't locate any actual bugs/pests on the plants at all.

Or perhaps it isn't bug damage at all and some sort of cell damage?

Does anyone have experience with this? I have an organic Neem Oil spray I might try in the morning. We are in zone 7 - the Asheville, NC area.

Here's another look at the damage - on a leaf that shows the areas where the damage isn't broken through, and the top side of the same leaf.

Weather has been sporadic, sunny yet windy, dry, now a cold snap. Then you likely planted them too early and you are seeing weather damage in addition to the spraying issue. Squash is a summer, a warm weather crop. Young seedlings easily suffer from wind burn if not protected from the wind. And even larger plants will not tolerate cool soil and drastic changes in weather exposure without damage developing. In too cool soil the roots cannot absorb nutrients and the leaves show the resulting damage. Damaged leaves quickly develop more damage when exposed to wind, rapid changes in air temps, and sprays. Bring out the fungicides early with some plants but only when they are also planted out at the proper time in the proper soil temps etc. Pesticides come out of the garden shed only when there are actual pests doing actual damage. :) If the weather cooperates, these plants might recover ok but if they don't you still have plenty of time to plant new ones once the warm weather stabilizes. Hmmm... I'm wondering if the bulb was growing under overly wet conditions when that leaf was produced? I have a papilio that was too wet and grew a leaf with the red edge like yours and some red on the top of the leaf, but not underneath... presumably a result of red blotch (for my plant, not necessarily yours). Does the red wipe off... like rust (of the plant variety, not metal)? Perhaps someone with more growing experience will have some better information! -Tina

Your plants, like mine, have an infestation of Tecoma Leaf Tier. “Tier” is pronounced like tire. The worms tie the leaves up in curls. They also skeletonize the leaves, and they end up looking like clear tissue paper. The black dots are their poop. From what I’ve found, it it’s a relatively new insect. Also, from what I’ve found, they can be controlled with an organic spray called BT. BT stands for Bacillus thurengiens, but don’t trust my spelling of the full name. BT is a soil microbe that affects the intestines of worms and caterpillars. They aren’t killed on contact. They die when they eat it, so you don’t have to spray every single insect. Other insects and critters, like bees, pets and people, aren’t affected because they don’t have the intestines of a worm. For more info, Google ”Tecoma Leaf Tier.”

Our morning glory leaves are riddled with holes as well ... and the culprits in our case are golden tortoise beetles. Really neat things, actually -- but they love anything in the potato family (which morning glories are!) Look carefully and you might see them if they're your problem -- they look just like ladybugs that have been gilded with liquid gold. And they eat perfect little round holes in the leaves. I'm not sure they do any significant harm -- mostly cosmetic I gather -- so that might affect your decision about control. We'd never seen them before this year. neem oil is good for fungus and to prevent insects from breeding, but it usually doesn't directly kill bugs.. i would try spinosad instead. can be found in most of the local chains under the bonide/captain jack brand.

That damage doesn't look like cabbage worms to me. Cabbage worms usually make holes in the leaves. Your damage looks more like slug damage along the edges. If you can check them with a flashlight after dark you may see the culprit. Sluggo usually works well on slugs but you may have to apply it around the plants a few times to thin the herd.

reminds me of early spring cutworm damage ... to some extent ...

and the offenders are often the exact color of what they eat ... so if you look close int he morning.. you might still find them.. before they go hide ...

i would pull back the mulch a few inches .. and gently scratch around the top of the soil.. and see if you can find them ... if it is such.. there might only be one or two ...

watch new growth over time.. to figure out when you have won the battle .. and if its not them.. then any of the others suggested above ..

do note.. many of the early spring munchers .. quickly turn into something else .. and basically do no real damage to the part of the plant thats important ... presuming populations dont get out of control ... if you are just seeing random minor damage.. no need to go ballistic on a cure ...

also keep in mind.. you probably have to hit the bugger with the oil.. so just applying it to the leaf may or may not do anything.. you really are better off finding it.. and IDing it.. BEFORE you start trying eradicate it ...
