Check out the message "Currants and Blueberries in Container?". I have my blueberries in large pots under a tree, where they get morning to noon sun and shelter from the hot afternoon sun, have a good acid soil, and don't have to compete with tree roots. It's not hard to move them as the sun pattern changes over the year, if necessary. Southmoon is giving me the best flavor and size right now, but the pot is further away from the tree, gets more sun. More blueberry plants make the best companion planting. Then there's enough for you and the birds. A territorial bluebird and several mockingbirds guard the bushes from each other in my yard, and an occasional squawk is heard as one chases the other off.

Hi cuzzx, It's good to hear that you have had success with Blues nesting in your boxes. I set up 2 new boxes last Fall, very much the same distance and out of sight from each other. My place is about an acre. I now have 4 Bluebird nestboxes here. I have learned from others who have more than one or two nestboxes on about an acre,that the Blues would use one box and then after the babies fledged will move to another box and use that one. Also, chickadees would use one of the other boxes also. Which wouldn't upset the Blues at all. Nor would this upset me....I like chickadees. Jean NW GA

Hi all, Again a long time passes since our last post. But we'd like to share a few current photos now to let everyone see our Family Blue as of today. :) Mr.B (Father) : Missy (Mother) : Together: The five fledglings of their 1st nest (2010-1) : The six fledglings of their 2nd nest (2010-2) : They have a 11 babies so far this season (exactly as they did at this time last year). And Missy is incubating 5 blue eggs in her 3rd nest as I type this. We couldn't have hoped for a better nesting season... Please wish us and them continued success. Kenn & Temple ps to kendra - Sorry I didn't answer before now... Missy and Mr.B have been here continuously (every day) since 2007. We know them by sight, sound, and behavior just as you would know kept indoor birds. We get to know and recognize the individual fledges over the course of the season as many of them stay until Fall and a few over-Winter here with their parents. ***I guess I am doing everything totally wrong. What? I don't have a clue A few years ago I only saw a bluebird once in a 'blue' moon. Now my back yard is full of them. I wonder what would happen if I did the right things to attract the bluebirds.*** SO how far apart are your four nestboxes that all have bluebirds, just curious, would be quite cool to be able to have four boxes in the backyard with all bluebirds but it just doesn't happen normally. Last year I had the opportunity to have my first nesting fledglings stay around while the adults went on to the second nesting and they all stayed around until they left to go south in October. Was so cool to have 10 bluebirds around. I am lucky enough to get one pair each year in my yard (should be able to get two with the distance between some of the nestboxes) but we have tons of Tree Swallows in all the boxes swooping around the yard. What do you mean you do everything wrong to get bluebirds? Putting up a nestbox is all you need to do to attract them. I hope your boxes are mounted properly so they stay safe from predators and the dreaded House Sparrows. Good luck! Donna
