I would still argue for continuing the current floor through the space. It's just too small to mix floors and have it look good, particularly given what you've invested in opening it up. I think the floor you're looking at putting in will detract, rather than add, to the value you're putting into the coop. That said, budget is of course a reality. Given that you're looking at adding a fairly small island that's a fairly standard length, what about adding a freestanding island instead of a cabinetry island, and using the savings for he floors? I think the reason that people are simplifying the problem is because we think that you control the variables. If someone else is bent on keeping the trim how it is, that's different. I suspect you've probably already made the same arguments to them as we are making to you! So, given that trim is a fixed constraint, here are some mock-ups with navy + grey or brown or beige: I actually like how the brown makes the trim/door disappear. But I would probably pair it with a cream and use the navy as a minor accent rather than a full wall.

I don't think shutters will look right on the style of that house. Instead would you consider improving your landscaping between the trees and the garage? I think adding some color, texture, and height would help add some liveliness.
