Would you change the wall color in my dining room and kitchen?
Comments (31)You are all so wonderful! I'm kind of having a bad day, and coming here to 28 responses made my day!! :) Some background I should have included: I am having reconstructive surgery on my knee next week. I tore my ACL skiing this winter...the only trip my husband and I have had together for about 8 years, and look what happens. Oh well! But for the past month, I've been in total cleaning and re-decorating mode. I know i'm going to not be able to do a lot of things for a few months, and so I'm trying to get things done now. Every spring brings lots of projects inside and out, and I'm trying to get done now what I can. Plus, I'm addicted to HGTV, and watching it every day will definitely make you want to get working! By the way, I've had lots of help. I'm able to do a lot by myself, but I don't push it. :) Those light fixtures are from Rejuvenation and were pretty expensive (for me! I saved for all three!), so I don't think it's anything I could replace just yet. I had a chandelier here when I moved in, and I just felt like my house wasn't big enough for one. My house is really small. Well, maybe 1500 square feet with a finished basement, but it's a common 20's foursquare. I have no entryway, for example. Just a big front porch and a door that opens straight into my living room. I will consider moving the table sideways - thanks! And the pics of my babies, I will consider that, too. I will find a pic of the rug and post it tonight. Why I got a dark-colored area rug with two kids is beyond me! :) But it's pretty. Hopefully, this fall, I'll be able to return to part-time work and have some extra cash for accessories. I love this room, but I just felt like something was missing. Granite would be awesome, in my dreams! I never thought I'd forget the details of my kitchen remodel, but I have! I will try to remember the name of my laminate. It really was a good choice, I think. Lots of people think it's something other than laminate, and it's held up pretty well. Some scratches, but nothing major. Here are some more pics of the kitchen until I can get more of the rug. Thanks for making me feel like my kitchen isn't outdated yet! I would love interior shutters on this window. As you can see, I have a lovely view of the AC unit next door. :)...See MoreWhat would you change in this kitchen?
Comments (32)You might want to prioritize what you can live with and what you absolutely have to change. When we moved we had a lot of repairs to do. I never was drawn to cherry cabinets or staggered cabinets--I strongly disliked them. We couldn't afford to redo them. So, I needed to figure out how to live with them. I went to work at houzz. I would type in cherry cabinets and keywords that describe my style. I would see what the experts did with staggered cherry cabinets and I got so many ideas. Now I don't have a problem with the cabinets because I merged them into my style and the "cherry ness" has disappeared. I only see my style now and before I only saw cherry. So, take a look at houzz and see what the experts have done with what you don't like about your kitchen and see if there is a way for you to work with it. I don't think you will regret it. A funny sidenote . . . I couldn't stand the granite and couldn't afford new countertops. We had redone the kitchen in our previous home 3 years ago and loved loved the granite. The only person that ever loved them as much as my husband and I was my sister. No one really commented on it (maybe they disappeared because of the other things going on?) The granite in my new house gets so many compliments. I guess I was wrong? The granite isn't as hideous as I thought? Apparently it is a good thing that I didn't spend a lot of money changing something that was perfectly good. I spent so many nights awake before we moved trying to figure out how I was going to live with cabinets and granite that I didn't choose. Instead I think I needed to work on accepting what I had and getting creative. And, also, be aware that in a empty kitchen many things that stand out will blend and even disappear after you add your style and decorate. Hopefully this helps. I don't want to see you spend a lot of money redoing a kitchen that you can make beautiful without breaking the bank....See MoreWhat would you change in this kitchen layout?
Comments (11)You could move the fridge to the pantry wall, with the ovens beside it, similar to one of these layouts: If you pull the fridge forward far enough for the doors to clear the pantry, you can have an extra-deep appliance garage, and the functional flow would be the same, but in reverse of the current plan. There wouldn't be as much prep space between the sink and cooktop, as in your plan, but it exceeds the NKBA recommended minimum of 36"....See MoreKitchen remodel,.... Help, what would you change ??
Comments (10)Minimum recommended clearance is 42" (NKBA guidelines), but you have 48" work aisles, and a 50" traffic aisle, so I think your kitchen will function well. I can't tell if you've accounted for counter overhang (1" minimum), so your 48" aisles might be smaller. If you can change the window to two windows, and put the range there, you could have separate clean-up and prep zones. In this plan the fridge would be near the pantry, and also near the DR. With the separate clean-up zone, a helper can unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without crossing into the prep and cooking zones. Even if you don't put a prep sink on the island, prep will still be to the right of the clean-up sink....See MoreLovely M
