Shed Dormer Questions
Comments (1)No such thing as 'pre-fab framing' unless you frame sections of the dormer yourself and have a crane lift them into place. Otherwise this is a labor intensive, highly skilled process to frame the dormer on site. ------------- Some aluminum siding is still available. Usually 8in. panels in white only. Otherwise most use vinyl. Vinyl costs far less...Usually 5X less than aluminum siding....See Moreshed dormer addition on side of house
Comments (2)Visit your local codes office to determine what the minimal allowable roof slope may be and approach some architects to see if perhaps they might have another idea. Spending 60K+ is a situation where you want experienced licensed local professionals to give you their input. You won't get any but the most generic of suggestions online....See MoreVenting a Shed Dormer
Comments (7)Regarding the building code, any homeowner is responsible to the city for meeting all codes and ordinances and even if the homeowner assigns that responsibility to a licensed contractor, it does not relieve the homeowner from their obligation to the city. If you are going to make important design decisions about your house you should buy a copy of the code and read it carefully before asking the building inspector any questions. It is always better to make an informed proposal rather than ask an inspector how he thinks you should build something. Many inspectors will understandably want to give you a simple answer rather than a full explanation of your options....See MoreHelp with exterior detailing -- shed or gable dormer?
Comments (23)Thank you everyone for the insight and comments! This is my first time posting on this site and everyone has been very helpful and respectful, much appreciated. Our initial impression was that the roof on the left was very empty and the overall look appeared very "simple." But maybe that's what we should go with? I agree it does look fine without the dormer. However, we live in Myrtle Beach, SC and a lot of houses here seem to have a lot of dormers so figured adding one to the roof on the left would make it not so "simple" looking? The other thing is I really want to add a metal accent somewhere on the roof. Not sure why I'm enamored by it so much but I am. The problem with adding it to the dormer on the right side of the garage is you wouldn't really see it. @Woody Vaughan or Shaun Fogarty Yes, the rendering isn't exact. Our idea is to have the shed dormer running most of the way across the roof line like the example below: https://www.houseplans.com/plan/2889-square-feet-4-bedroom-3-5-bathroom-2-garage-farmhouse-traditional-craftsman-cottage-sp276687 We thought it added some architectural interest and made it look less simple. I will have to talk to my builder and see if we can make it functional in the living space to help bring in more light, didn't even think of that honestly. Thanks for the tip!...See MoreUser
