Who designed the addition on the back? You will need an achitect to help you get something that looks good now.IMO that whole front entry need some work and the first thing to go for me would be the circle driveway , when you live in the country there are many ways to handle guests parking look at those. That will allow some really nice landscaping in the future.There is some seious work needed on the front so get that architect now.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting We are open to pretty much anything. We don't live in the country though. We just got lucky with a huge lot in a neighborhood. As far as an architect goes, I am open to suggestions as I don't know of any locally.

First determine your budget for the project. Then expand your search further out until you find an architect that you feel you can work with and is capable to provide you with a good solution.

@Mark Bischak, Architect For us, we see it as the other way around.... what is the budget we will need to find a good solution and we will go from there. As far as a good architect goes, I live in a small town and everything is word-of-mouth which often backfires because everyone is somehow everyone is related to someone else if that makes sense.

I know what you mean. I practiced architecture in a small town for 20 years.

One of the first things an architect is going to want to know is how much money you are going to want to spend to make your house look good. If it is $500, they may suggest planting trees. If it is $500,000, you're going to have a very nice looking house. The architect's fee will be relative to the scope of the project.

With the mix of roof styles (hip and Gable), the mix of roof pitches in the same plane (hip is shallow, gable is steep), sorry, but this home will never look good if you maintain the current configuration. It may be made to look better (fixing landscaping, going to a single color and style of roof cladding, repainting, maybe adding a few well considered and appropriate features such as pillars, shutters new front door etc.), but it will never look good.

If you start with what your budget is (what you are willing to spend), you can then work with architects who can show you what solutions that budget will provide. That way you will know whether your budget aligns with your idea of what looks good, and you will likely get an outcome that is both functional and you'll be happy with. If you approach it from what budget will it take to provide a good solution, then the answer is DC to Light (i.e. $500K + for full gut, partial tear down and rebuild, down to $500 for new paint) because "good solution" is in the eye of the beholder. Change the old roof to match the new..............it will look more continuous and the addition may not be visible from the front. How does it look from the lakeside? More plants in front will help as well!

@Jazz Easy You hit the nail on the head!! Now I know why it looks SO awkward. I kept thinking that it was off-balance (still is), but the main discord I feel is the 2 different styles. I am SO disappointed right now in the contractor's work and my not asking enough questions! This is such a Frankenstein :(

i would just make sure you are not better off starting from scratch with a new house if its a spectacular lot with a not so spectacular house. Even if it is much later down the road.

just throwing out that as food for thought.

we were in a similar situation. The lake lot was worth a lot and the house on the lot was not.

Was that DIY design? Surely you didn’t let the contractor design it?

You might want to close your eyes and contemplate a teardown and new construction. Which you should have considered from the beginning. . A “fix” for that doesn't address the rest of the whole.
