How to handle a change in estimate price in the middle of a job?

Hi all,

I am in a very tough spot and would appreciate your advice on how to handle this problem. I hired a reputable landscaper for my new home build based on a reference and good online reviews. He has done several jobs in the neighborhood I am building in. I provided landscaping plans (already made by builder) and general HOA requirements. He reviewed the plans, reviewed my lot dimensions, and personally inspected the lot with his crew as well. Now in the middle of the job they are saying that they severely underestimated the sod for my property and need another 16 pellets! 16 pellets is 7200 square feet and with their sod price at $0.59/square foot this would be over $4200!! I think this is outrageous and if I had known this I obviously would have looked for or went with other estimates. I'm in a bind because it's halfway done. How is this generally handled?
