Didn't cover my pineapple plant :(
Comments (7)IME, wait till the danger of frost is past, give a gentle tug on the center core of leaves, if they pull away (i.e. are rotted/dead) then that plant is most likely a goner. If the center does not easily pull apart, you are most likely in the clear. The leaves off a dead plant often come apart like pulling leaves from a cooked artichoke. Sometimes the plants amaze us and will put out some pups from their base. Mother nature does her own thing at times, which is why I am not speaking in absolute terms. I'm in North pinellas, if yours are toast email me in a few weeks and I may have some to spare- no rare variety, just the common 'started from the tops.'...See MoreHow to divide pineapple lily
Comments (16)I saw a gardening show recently where Tony Avents (from Plant Delights Nursery from which I ordered my pineapple lily)told about taking the leaf cuttings. He said they took 2" cuttings and put them in soiless mixture and keep moist. They are supposed to start new little plants within 6 weeks. I took a long leaf last week and cut 19 pieces that I hope are beginning to root. I don't know if there is a certain season that is better than others. Tony Avents said that several years ago they sent the plant to every company that did tissue culture and they all failed at propogating 'Sparkling Burgundy'. He later read an article in a British gardening magazine that explained how to propogate them and that is how he got enough stock to begin selling them....See MoreInexpensive facial exfoliator sensitive skin
Comments (10)sensitive skin needs to be really careful about such things - some folks are sensitive to abrasion, and do better with exzymatic exfoliation. some folks are chemically sensitive, and some folks are both... the gentlest thing you can use to loosen dead skin cells is plain yogurt and oatmeal (you can run it through the blender dry, or the coffee grinder to make the particles finer) - berries and pineapple are a bit stronger, and contain those 'fruit acids' people talk about...pineapple has enough of it that, raw, it will keep jello from setting. the strongest natural ones are mango and payaya - papain is a powerful 'debriding' enzyme, and is too strong for my face all by itself, I blend it with yogurt - but it does wonders on my elbows! plain asprin is basically saliclic acid and baking soda, and a few drops of water makes one into a tiny little puddle of masque. stronger than that is the shampoo for psoriasis, which can be up to 3%... which is somewhere between the .5% of most face washes, and the 15% of a BHA peel....See MorePineapple corer/slicer
Comments (13)Juellie, the problem with asking them to core, peel, and slice a pineapple at the grocery is that they might not scrub it down before cutting into it. Pesticide residues on the outside skins, peels, hulls, husks, and rinds can be very high. If these fruits and veggies are cut before washing, the knife can deliver dirt and pesticides into the meat. It's probably not the best idea to buy cut up pineapple or melons or other produce at the store. I know a fair amount about pesticide use and am also very sensitive to chemical exposure. I've had to really learn to be careful, whenever possible....See More
