Sliced mangoes are a different species and grow on a different type of tree.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Gary Larson cartoons.

Mine flushed twice so I have bigger ones and smaller ones.

This is the first year it's done really well. Now if I can beat the squirrels to them.

Ken, I'm right here :0) Ofcourse it's a 'Sherwood Compact' but if I would tell this in the beginning this topic was done by my answer and that would be a shame ;0) It's a good thing to check our members knowledge once and a while. 'Jakobsen' is much differend: It's needle colour is more darker green because it's a cross with Pinus nigra. Also it's growing habit is more sprerading and it will lose it's inner needles on older wood which give's it a more or less baldy look...

I've got it growing here just north of the TN line, in KY - no fruits yet, but it's survived 3 or 4 winters - did kill back to the ground its seedling year, but came back just fine. Crushed leaves do smell *kinda* like peanut butter - but it ain't Jif!

Today is a better day but that marker still says UCE, and no it isn't statice cause that ends in ICE and it doesn't look like statice. So with Remy's help(36 words that end with UCE and no im not that bright to use em all) i think i can introduce and also deduce that it isn't lettuce or applesauce or a spruce, hope it doesn't overproduce but if it does i may reintroduce it at next's years swap or just sell it as produce, or maybe even superinduce it but it could maybe even overproduce then i'd have to call a truce. Think I'll just call a truce. I was trying to fit in seduce and oversauce but nawwwwwwwwwww! Thanks so much gardenfriends!

I've been waiting until they start to turn color but I've had them ripen and start falling off the tree even before that.

I noticed that when they fell off and a squirrel or whatever eat into them they looked golden and ripe. So I picked a couple off the tree that didn't look ripe but they were. So now I don't know.

I'll probably try a gentle squeeze. A sniff.

Maybe purposely pick a couple early and see how it ripens on the counter.

I'm just learning, but this year I'll have a few more to experiment with.

I'd never bought them at the store except for maybe once and I didn't have enough sense to let it ripen. So I wasn't impressed and never bought them again.

The few I've gotten from my tree have been smooth and sweet though.

Mine are Glenn, I think a Haden strain? I believe I read mine are supposed to ripen June and into July but mine seemed to run a bit later than that the last couple years.

Mine were ugly on the outside (dark stains), but really nice on the inside. :)

How very cool, a Mango tree? I know that Mangos are picked before they are ripe so can we assume that as in the case of other fruits while they will continue to ripen they are never as good as when they tree ripen a la peaches or what ever? I love mangoes. When I was a child in the Philippines we had some sort of fruit trees-Maybe papaya. We never got any as the locals stole them before we got to eat any. Well stole is truth but not. Those people were desperately poor in those days and who could blame them. We didn't. But I was disappointed to not get to try what ever fruit it was. To have a Mango tree though-wow. Cool.

Maybe that's why the ones in the store don't have dark sap streaks running down the sides? If I'd pick them earlier they'd look better even if they didn't taste quite as good? I think I'd rather wait then.

I've read some people can be sensitive to mango. Especially if they're (extra?) sensitive to Poison Ivy. They're related and both contain urushiol.

I've gotten into Poison Ivy in the mountains and itched up a storm. Trimming Mango branches, peeling fruit, etc. hasn't bothered me at all.

There is such a thing as pickled green mangos. I tried some from an import grocery store, but I did not like them at all. Of course I did not know how to eat them. I tried them just plain, but maybe they are meant to be eaten as a condiment or ingredient in a dish.
