Hallway: need decorating advice
Our bedroom wing hallway functions, was last painted in 2013, and is over due for a sprucing up. I am design challenged so I need advice.
1. Several old drywall seams need redoing, especially on the ceiling near the whole house fan. I've started this task. Wondering if I can paint the metal fan cover, which is a cream color, a little like a 50year old Navajo white.
2. Want to convert the linen alcove to a closed cabinet on top of a drawer base. We would have to hire a framing carpenter to redo the opening. Thinking of painting to match walls.
3. Painting: I've chosen a pale green BM 596 Peppermint Ice in an eggshell finish. Hope I chose the correct finish since I usually use semi-gloss.
4. Ceiling height in this house is 7'6". Do I paint it same as walls?
5. Trim is bright white - keep it the same or match the walls?
6. When the painting is completed we will remove the old stained carpet. Hubby wants me to lay wood-look laminate planks, same as in the dining room. I've already done the spare bedroom.
The general style of the house is transitional. We are not minimalist but don't like the cottage clutter look either. Tere are more photos in my ideabook.

4 years agopaint choices. The pale green doesn't show well in the harsh hallway light, but it looks decent next to the few vintage photo frames I have. The creamy whites looked like 50yr old dirty kitchen walls when the hall light was off.
The existing color on the left of the photo is actually a pale blue, Blue Whisper, if I recall correctly. It's from 2013.

Suggestions needed for decorating a looong hallway
Comments (9)I can't resist jumping in because we had an exceptionally long narrow hallway without windows in our very first home, a Spanish-bungalow duplex. Our paultry decorating fund went into the rooms opening off the dark shadowy hall, which were very sunny and bright. All frames and walls were already an off white and the wall-to-wall a rich deep moss green the salesman told our landlady was that yucky olive that was so popular. The light was an iron fixture almost certainly original to the bungalow. That's it--dark, cool, calm, quiet. Sounds boring, but it was beautifully simple in spite of my intentions and a perfect transition from and to the rooms opening off. Everything looked better because of it. That hall had such a wonderful character of its own that I even sat down in it a couple times to enjoy its calm. So, one color for walls/frames/doors, lovely rugs, fine architectural light fixtures (the ones you have?), and...nothing else? BTW, where our hall jogged at the end, and continued another 5 feet out of sight, I decorated that little hall segment as if it were its own destination--bookcase, painting above, lamp--creating a suite out of it and the only bath and our bedroom that opened off it. Comments (5)I would just get some very large, over sized art in a modern style. If you're trying to get some function out that space, you could get a skinny console table. I obviously don't know what that is a hallway to (or from), but I like to put bookcases in hallways. People always say there isn't room, but there is. I like it when there are items in a long hallway that make you "meander" through it, it helps to break it up if there are actually things that you have to weave your way through. Comments (7)Hi Miss Rae - that is indeed a beautiful alcove! I think you've got a great start. I love the chairs creating a reading nook. Some free tweaks you could try: Move the chair closest to the window to the other side of the window. That might look a little more inviting from the other end of the hallway. If the bookshelf can fit in the spot under the window, you might try swapping the bookshelf with the console table. It will put your books next to your chairs and add visual weight at the end of the space where you need it. With the console table in the hallway, you might try a basket with pillows or blankets on the bottom shelf. They could be used in the nook or just add pattern and color in the hall space. Some things you might try that will cost money: Visually, the space reads as long and thin. To help combat that, try an accent wall treatment on the window wall. A strong or dark color, or a wallpaper pattern will help the space feel more in proportion. You might put floor lamps next to your chairs for reading in the evening. (If you prefer to keep the chairs next to each other, just one lamp will probably do.) You might pull your existing rug into the hallway space and get a larger one for the alcove. Something plush or fuzzy might make it a more fun space to snuggle up. Pull the color from the existing rug so they coordinate. 4 years agoRemove the mirror; it just lengthens the hallway more. Replace the ceiling fixture with track lights you can adjust to shine on the walls/photos. Hang photos centered 5' above the floor after having them framed and matted to match. Or find just one photo of each individual whose shining face you'd like to see daily. Have the photos blown up and put on canvas.
