Oh, Sam and Joey, I remember those days in Alaska. I wonder about a space heater under a tent with you sleeping by them.

Sheila I might have been willing to give that a shot!...the space heater part anyway...if I hadn't planted them along a long fence line. : ) My zone pushing experiments seem to have survived the winter (at least they each have several inches of green cane coming from the base) so I am hoping that they will be okay covered over with heavy duty weed fabric and a layer of snow. If you have any Alaskan wisdom to spare I am all ears!

Joey, hopefully all your inches of snow will keep them "warm and toasty" underneath. American Legacy was calling to me when I walked past it at high country roses. Matt doesn't have it on his website, but they had a few and let me buy one still. Apparently a friend of his in Kansas (I think) insisted that he grow it since they have good luck with it there. Sheila, its hard to imagine gardening in a zone colder than here. I feel like this is my limit. Every spring I have too much stress worrying about how my garden will fare. Is it a lot easier now? Seil, thats great that you have a greenhouse to keep everything going through the next cold spell. I love how it looks all lit up!

Sam & Joey, it is so great not having to worry about plant death from cold here. I never did beat the zone 3 really there. Roses could grow backwards and eventually give out. Rugosas and Canadians and Spinosissimas did come through for me there. Some of the Canadians needed more heat in the summer and weren't happy either. I had a limited rose plant palette there. I am ordering some I grew there to see how they compare in this climate. I still regret leaving William III up there, and now I can't find another one.

Sam what did you get for snow cover? We got 22 inches so I am really hoping that is enough to compensate for a low of -7 tonight!

Wow 22 inches! We only got 3-4 Probably. Hoping it insulates everything a little. I’m sure there will be some damage though. I put piles of mulch over all my roses and cut all my blooming bulbs. Besides that, everything is on its own. Stay warm out there!

It's supposed to get below freezing tonight and even lower tomorrow night, here. My roses have been putting out buds this last week. I hope they don't all get frozen.

Same here, I hadn't really removed my mulch yet so I'm hoping that mine are ok.

Well, this cold spell froze the 8 inches of new growth and buds on my roses. I'm devastated. Will they recover? I guess it will just be a lost year for my roses.

Oh no that is so sad! If it is any consolation, the same thing happened to mine last year but they were all still in pots from our move so the roots were very disturbed. They were a bit late blooming but all survived and went on to give me flowers. Hope yours pull through!

Oh no Noseometer! I'm so sorry to hear that. It must have gotten cold there too. Its supposed to be down to 15 again tomorrow night here. I peaked under the mulch that I piled on top, and I think most of mine are ok. They had a lot less new growth than yours did though. I know yours will have to start over, but hopefully they'll be ok!

So sorry to hear you lost so much new growth, and spring buds too! However, I think they will all be OK. I've only lost one rose in this manner where all the new growth was killed or eaten by a bunny. Everything else pulled through just fine. You'll have to let us know if they recover enough for a spring show. I'm betting once you trim off the dead new growth they will get going again and you will still get a show. But I live in CO where one has to have hope because stuff like this happens all the time.

We were supposed to be low 30s, but got into the 20s so we'll see what happens. So many buds, but i think with these shorter freezes aren't quite as bad as longer spells of cold. Much of my earlier growth was frozen back in Fev and March resulting in horrid little leaves that look like RRD, but are not unless the majority of my plants are affected. Mainly the less hardy that leafed out earlier. I've left them on, but they look weird and I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet at this late date and pull them off. thoughts anyone.

Last night the temp was about 26 and tonight about 27. I covered the roses and left it on for tonight, BIG FROST.

Mine are all buried completely. It is supposed to be a high of 29 today and a low of 12 overnight, and another day of snow tomorrow, so I will be waiting at least til the weekend before I get to see who has survived the cold of the last few days. My kids are highly indignant that spring went away and winter came back lol.

Vaporvac do they need those leaves for an extra boost of photosynthesis, or are they so damaged that they can't do their work?

Kentucky Rose, are you in the country? Joey, I can't answer that question there so weird-looking I might post a picture of them in a bit I took a bunch of pictures. I thought they might grow out and some of them have but they are new leaves the old ones never grew properly. I'm also seeing this on one of my clothilde super bush.

Vaporvac, Yes, here in Lexington, Ky. I pruned my roses March 24 - 26. The rose bushes began leafing out early and got bitten, but that was Mother Nature and it was too early. But for me, the problem is now. I just came in from redoing some of the frost blankets. We are having strong winds and the stakes are coming up, stones rolling away, and it looks like sailboats in my yard. I look wind beaten, too! Good luck!

Sounds like a lot of us are getting a late cold spell. It was supposed to have gotten down to about 28 last night. I'm not sure since I don't have a thermometer in that part of the garden. The water on the tarps was all frozen and many of the buds were previously frozen from the night before. Good luck to all of you. I hope things warm up and that your roses grow well/come back well. Roses are pretty tough, but not so much the new growth, and it is such a disappointment.

That is such a sad picture! Ugggh. Kentucky, we're having the same temps and windy weather. My roses are too spread out and on some difficult terrain to cover. Since I generally zone up, they're on their own, although I do it would take lower temps to do too much damage. One night vs. multiple nights might also make a difference.

The weather forecast says in 16 min. we are supposed to get snow with a total accumulaton of 4-8 inches. TV says 8 inches. With the last snow (that just melted) we had damage to iris and asparagus but the roses all looked good. They hadn't really started much of anything.

Ohh nosemeter im sorry about all that new growth, we are supposed to get pretty cold here in the next few nights so im keeping my fingers crossed.

Vap, i had the same thing happen to my prairie sunrise in February, and your so right! It was the only one that broke dormancy to early and the new leaves froze and are now deformed much like Rrd. I just left them on for now until new healthier growth appears.

How often does Country Dancer bloom for you? The description on HCR says shade tolerant. Do you have it in partial shade or full sun? Thanks!
