Thanks, Peter and Ig. The PM is already spreading to the acorn and butternut. I soaker hose long-watered yesterday and I pulled the gray, dead PM leaves off and put them into the trash bin. Someone I met suggested fish emulsion feed. Of course, I cannot now locate that small green bottle of stinky liquid. The soil drains well. Weedy area and some Heritage raspberries or maybe they are wild blackberries are sprouting up here and there. It's a constant challenge. I'm tempted to experiment on the two front zucchini plants: immunox on one and "copper spray" on another. (What sort of copper spray? Any drawbacks?). The butternut squash up hill at my neighbor's isn't particularly full, but doesn't have any noticeable PW either. It rained last night and this morning, so that should help. With no rain or moisture, how could any Epsoma or 10-10-10 break down to get to the plants? Question: if overhead watering contributes to Powdery Mildew, PM, then what about rainfall? Is rainfall any different than overhead watering (assuming minimal back spash of soil onto leaves)?

It does not have the characteristics of a fern from the pictures. The leaves curl I think it could be Curly Dock.

Garlic and shallots can still be planted. You plant them in the fall and depending on your location and the variety they will be ready for harvest sometime between late June and mid August. Sometimes they sprout in the fall before the ground freezes and sometimes they don't but they will grow fine regardless. Bulb onions are completely different. What variety you plant and when depends on your location. In New England you will need a long day onion. Lots of information on growing these a search here and on the Allium Forum will pull up but in short, if you are starting from seed you will need to start them indoors in January or February and then transplant them outdoors maybe sometime around mid April. They will be ready for harvest in mid summer. If you want to deal with seeds and decide to plant sets or store bought transplants then you will still plant them in the spring. If you plant them at the wrong time onions will only make scallions and will not bulb up (same goes for garlic and shallots too). "I have more of these (grocery store) red onions that went soft and are sprouting. Compost or plant them?" You can plant them if you want but don't expect them to form a bulb. They will make scallions and will flower. Onions are biennial and flower in their second year or growing season. Rodney P.S. @macranthos @floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK @callirhoe123 My sense of smell is not strong, but someone who smells well described the smell as kind of like a marjoram, cirtrusy smell (not minty). The backs of the leaves did not appear silvery in my mind. Here is what they look like.
