Do you keep a garden journal?
Comments (13)This is my third year keeping a journal and it is very helpful. I use a generic 12 month planner that has a one page month-at-a-glance, followed by pages with more room for daily posts. I add in pages that have graphs of my beds, lists of seasonal tasks to do, and notes of things to not do again. I record planting and first harves dates on the month at a glance pages, as well as reminders of when to start what; and then make notes on the daily pages, such as which varieties are doing best, notes on exactly how I started seeds, etc. I garden in 9 raised beds, using succession planting throughout the entire year. I would have a mess if I didn't keep track of things! I use my journal to track crop rotations and successions throughout the year. That alone is worth the effort....See MoreDo you keep a gardeners journal?
Comments (4)I've kept a weekly list of what's in bloom on and off for years, I find it helpful and usually jot down a few other notes while I'm sitting there. This year I started a blog and find it keeps a pretty good record of the year, plus it reminds me to take pictures on a regular basis of both the good and the bad. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be and so far I'm keeping up with it....See MoreDo you keep a garden journal?
Comments (14)I keep daily weather logs because I'm a weather nut. In my weather logs, I make brief garden entries. I used to keep a specific garden journal but after decades of gardening I decided my garden was a place of enjoyment, relaxation, & peace. It was not a science experiement. Maintaining detailed records became a chore & when I got behind...I felt somehow guilty. Realized I was making work out of pleasure so I stopped. I do maintain a list of everything that's planted in the gardens & note if something dies. And, that's more for if/when we sell the property since our gardens & my botanical listings sold our last home before it hit MLS. Keeping track of the weather has been of enormous help to me in my gardens. I've learned that my perceptions of what the weather has been are almost always wrong. Having actual weather facts has resulted in much positive shuffling of plants in my gardens. For example, this year I don't think my lilac met its dormancy requirement explaining the ridiculously poor bloom. If it happens again next year, I'll probably give up on lilacs. Global warming is very evident in my shoreline garden. I'm 'sperimenting with new hydrangea varieties because now even variegated ones are blooming for me. But, no journal of exact bloom dates, diseases, critters, etc. Tricia...See MoreDo you keep a garden journal?
Comments (13)Hi have tried for many years but apparently too lazy lol. always get a laugh though when I look at old notes. Either I can't read my own writing or I used so many short forms it doesn't make any sense lol. I often have dates without years . Since I'm always experimenting with different methods and have a terrible memory ,would make a lot o sense. Wost of all are orchids ,Almost all are hybrids and I lose the tag within 30 minutes of purchase . Same is true of repotting ,dividing, fertilizing, low temps, water schedules . When many have four or five names to the hybrid memory won't work at all. Have tried many time in the past but always get sidetracked . Oh well, too old to change now . Easy to remem ber NOIDS lol gary...See Morebbstx
