what's wrong with my banana plant?

Help someone! Some of the leaves are turning yellow. Not the bottom leaf the 3rd one up from the bottom is now yellow and brown and now the bottom leaf is starting to look the same way. Its an indoor plant in a south facing window. I have been fighting some kid of a bug problem. Little black bugs on the trunk and stems. Cant seem to get rid of them totally with my insect spray. Iv been feeding and watering him regularly. What am I doing wrong?

I've got 2 factors for you to check out. Check the Ph of your soil. It should be anywhere from 5.5 to 7.0. Personally, I adjust my ph down with lemon or pineapple juice. It works wonders! The other factor I urge you to check on it how hot that pot is getting. During the heat of the day, put your hand on the pot. If the pot feels hot, IT IS! I have had this be a problem with my plants. I have wrapped old coffee sacks or cardboard around the pot itself to block the sun from hitting it. Great Banana plant by the way!

they are probably needing more water and fertilizer, unless your soil is holding water,then they probably need less water. Usually in TN by this time of the year its pretty dry though, so excessive water is most likely not the cause. Definitely not too late this year, you have until october to grow them.

Matt, yes it's been growing slowly but consistently this winter. I had a fungus fly problem and determined larvae were probably eating away at the roots causing the outer psuedostem to rot. I poured in a hydrogen peroxide solution and trimmed the leaf down past the black discoloration, the peroxide worked wonders, the flies pretty much vanished. Left on vacation and came back 5 days later, the petiole had not done any further rotting, and a new leaf was coming out of the center.

Thanks guys! I made the hole in the bottom a little bit bigger and I have to admit when I felt the soil it through the bottom was kind of muddy. I always heard that bananas were heavy feeders and I thought that meant that they need a lot of water but now I find out it's fertilizer that they need a lot of ( I think) Apr-Sept they get direct sunlight between 10 and 3 and filter light ( through surrounding trees) about four hours before and four hours after that. They have to spend 6 to 7 months indoors the rest of the year.

It's sad for the great outdoors. It needs lots more light and growing space. It was a hassle for me to plant my ornamental banana tree for years and then dig them up in fall but it worked out very good for them. I may have lost it after many years since I didn't dig them up last fall - not sure I want to go through the trouble again. Here are some photos when they were good sized (they get bigger each year). Cut the main stalk off for winter and don't let the culms dry out completely. A trug is usually what I put mine in for winter - bareroot.

in the basement for winter. This worked out fairly well. I stored the large culms one winter in cardboard boxes and they dried up and died.

The mother plant dies anyway so this was my last year trying to save the main stalk.

I had so many that year that I think I had 7 spots in the very back of the lot.

That's going to happen with some peple with in adequate light. It looks perfectly fine for another few weeks until it can go outside. It'll loose most, if not all the leaves when you put it back outside.
