What's the best car battery charger?
Comments (4)Thanks kalining, My car battery is good, but one bad thing about my Honda Odyssey is that if you accidentally leave on the dome light switch, its dead in the morning. We try to always leave the switch in the off position, but **** happens. haha One time I dusted off the dash area, and forgot to check on that switch and ended up with a dead battery in the morning. Bummer. My van is 11 years old, so hopefully the newer ones have an auto shut off for that dome light....See Moreanother episode of car battery disappointment
Comments (7)I'll have to go look at the brand(s) that I have. I have a 6 amp charger and the booster charger, but frankly, there's not a lot of difference between them. There's not a lot of different brands to really choose from. Actually, since I've had mine for so many years now, well, decades, going by brand name on mine wouldn't be a good idea since who knows if they're built the same way. Might be a good idea to go to a reputable auto parts store, but I'd go ahead and check the discount places too. Like I said, there's not a lot of manufacturers I've seen of the booster chargers but I do recall that at the time I got mine they could vary a lot in price. I think I paid about $50-$60 for mine and there were others, not really better, charging over $100 for similar. So shop around. Also, have a heavy duty extension cord in case you need it. Don't try using a lightweight one, invest in a good heavy outdoor cord. As I think about it, mine might be a 30 amp booster, I'd have to check. I'll double check. But it will put a charge in much faster. The alternative if you can't find a booster/charger is a 12-15 amp charger. That'll charge faster. The great thing about the boost is that it can get you going in seconds rather than having to wait 10, 20 or more minutes for it to charge. Remember safety rules with handling them. Never try to charge a frozen battery if you're in cold weather areas, or at least, only use a small trickle charger. It's best to then warm the battery, thaw it out before charging. A frozen battery, if it truly freezes is probably not much good anymore. Also, batteries give off gas when charging. Be careful in enclosed areas, and even outdoors. If you connect them wrong or short them out, there's a possibility of the battery blowing up. It is rare, but be aware it can happen. Not trying to scare you away, just show respect. I always connect the charger, double and triple check that red is to positive and black to negative and then turn away and even step away if possible then switch on the charger. If the needle doesn't go up but you hear the buzzing of the charger, you probably don't have a good connection on the battery. Shut off the charger, wiggle the clamps on the connectors and try again. Batteries can build up a corrosion. Be safe, be happy....See MoreDon't forget your car battery
Comments (8)I get pickup groceries through the Walmart grocery app, because I work from home anyway and with schools closed I am also doing homeschooling supervision for our 4 kids (the mister is considered an "essential employee" as are all salaried workers at his job - so he goes to work M-F as he normally does...but this gets him out of the house more, and we've had to do some adjusting so that I'm not completely bonkers by the time a weekend arrives - more or less full responsibilities for the kids on Sat/Sun for the mister while I get to relax a bit more than I usually do on weekends, and he's also doing more of it when he gets home from work when I need him to do so). Taking that short trip to get groceries and going to Costco all on my own while the mister is with the kids (there has to be an adult present until they get a bit older) is a lot more relaxing than I expected, but I'm not going to complain! ;)...See MoreSlightly O/T - Has anyone run a fountain off a car battery?
Comments (13)THANK YOU frankie, mad-gallica and sharon for your input. Once I looked up the Amazon link frankie provided I knew what combination of words to put into Walmart search and it did indeed come up with almost the same pump at a much cheaper price! (Chinese made of course but what isn't!) It looks just like the 110v electric version in one of my other fountains closer to the house. The 400mA is how much current it draws which appears to be very little. I also have used a low impedance battery fence charger as Sharon said that did 50 miles of multiple strand high tensile 12ga fence for my sheep and it lasted approximately 21 days between battery charges. I will try ordering 2 of these pumps and see how it goes. I'll report back but it will probably be later this summer as there's a lot of work to be done in that garden before the fountain. And I'll need one of those fake boulders to hide the battery box! Nothing like a big orange plastic lump in the center of flowers!...See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
