I was just thinking about words that are now commonly used. This is what I'm coming up with off the top of my head:

flattening the curve

self-isolation

surge

social distancing

metering

Dr. Fauci

stay at home orders

I'm sure there are many I haven't listed here, but these now just flow right out of my mouth in everyday conversation.

All of the above, for sure. BUT, personally (and in the privacy of my home), my new vocabulary is peppered too often with curses which I rarely ever used in my former daily life. To the point where those have become weakened and meaningless -- I need some new, stronger ones...

Yes, that's true, the same thought was coming to me reading news articles this week. Things that weren't typical in our every day speech. It was reminding me of the year our Mtn (St Helens) erupted. Very quickly we were all speaking with familiarity of quiescence vs minor eruption, lateral air blasts, pyroclastic flows....;0)

Oh, how I wish I had carrot stick legs!! Ha ha. I'm a pear with sausage legs. Maybe knockwurst, or bratwurst. And Jimmy-Dean-breakfast-sausage arms. I don't know what most of those terms mean and I think I'm pretty fashion conscious! Shooties? Capsules? Sounds like we're talking about drugs. Book ending...so we are supposed to match our shoes to our hair??

What is the noise you're trying to dampen? IF it's the sound of the drawers or doors hitting the cabinet frame when you close it, then self-close is your best option, followed by soft-close. These are types of runners and hinges that have mechanisms to arrest the movement of the door or drawer with a piston, no matter how forcefully the drawer or door was closed. They prevent slamming in that way. If you're talking about the noise of the contents of the drawer shifting as you close it, then any drawer liner would help.

A chiffarobe is a mixture of wardrobe and chest of drawers, usually with hanging space down one side behind a door, and drawers down the other. Sort of a small portable closet, used in modest older houses that had very little (if any at all) clothing storage built in. I was thinking about that lack of closets (my house suffers mightily from this affliction) the other day, and realized that nobody had anywhere near as many clothes as we do now, even in my mother's generation (she's in her 90's).

What have you learned to do through books and reading?

Like some here, I learn skills best in an interactive situation where I observe, then try, then get corrections. But an instructor is not always available to me, and books work reasonably well when no teacher is available for the skills I want to acquire. And even when they are, books enhance and expand the learning experience for me. I prefer to have both, but will take either when that is all I can get. What have I learned? Gardening, cooking, quilting, sewing were all skills I learned to varying degrees from books, though certainly I have had some instruction, too, particularly with sewing and tailoring. I'm getting mentally prepared to learn to knit, and I think I want to take up playing the recorder. I don't play any musical instrument. Knowing that I would give up quickly if I don't get to a rewarding level fast I thought, why not the recorder? Children learn quickly to play it on a simple level, yet this instrument is capable of producing lovely music in the hands of a musician. And best of all, no one could ever ask you to sing along! Each year, several smart people get together a go through a list of words and phrases and then publicly announce the ratings. Their word of the year or phrase of the year will go into books as something important.

It is my opinion that "social distancing" (or some variation) will be the phrase of the year for 2020.

From my understanding, surge is when the highest number are in the hospital or needing ventilators. Metering is when a store sets a limit on the number of customers in at a time; one has to leave before another can come in.

IMPACT! It started around the first of the year as "how the day's weather will 'impact' your day" on the CBS channel local news. It is now a household word of every day's life everywhere you get the news.

There is, of course, a German word for it: Hamsterkäufe, meaning to shop like a nervous, bulging-cheeked hamster.
