are you keeping that carpet? (it looks like it needs to be re-stretched. see how there is a lump in the middle? needs to be pulled taut again) But if you're changing it up, now is the time to do it

also, change out your outlets/outlet covers to something nice. they make gray ones to match the wall color. and you can get them w/the USB port in it.

these look much nicer than those ancient discolored ones. and, this isn't difficult to DIY. takes about 2 mins to switch one out.

if you need a fan, try and get a diff one. The one that's there is horrible looking and is way too small. for that room you need a 60"+ blade length.

or do a chandelier instead of the fan.

do you already have furniture? kind of hard to suggest anything without knowing your style

do something like this w/the wall. don't be afraid to use some color. high ceilings like that can take darker tones

you could always do something w/the ceiling.

@Beth H. :Thanks for the help! The carpet has been replaced since this photo was taken. We do have furniture but I'm not attached to it. One of the things I'm getting from your photos is that curtains soften a room...in our current bedroom we have curtains very similar to those in the first photo you attached and I really like them. We could keep those in the new house. The corner door and window combo have me stumped on how to hang curtains though. Would you do a corner mount or a rod on each wall with one curtain on each? If that makes sense.

you only have that one, small, crowded window. I don't see how you can do drapes. I''d just do some blinds.

@Beth H. : I would love to have a bigger window there. It's possible, but not in the budget for now. The window currently has a pull-down shade, and the patio door has built-in blinds. I'm sad because I love curtains in the bedroom and wish I could make them work.

well, maybe in the future when you have the budget, get them installed. I think it would make a huge difference in the way the room looks too.

i'd think about doing something w/your ceiling though. a few beams, or wood planks, or beadboard or shiplap, pine tongue and groove, etc.

Here is how you can treat your windows/door. And room ideas. Not sure what you have in terms of furniture but some ideas.

I think the most important thing to remember is the room won't look cozy if you don't fully decorate the people part. People level art, tables, lighting, rugs, etc.

We see posts all the time from people with high ceilinged rooms wondering why the room looks off. Most of the time the room is minimally decorated with things randomly hung high on the wall.

Decorating the upper part of the walls should be the icing on the cake. If you fully decorate the people level your high ceilings should look light and airy, not bare.

Add lots of texture and layers, and bring your ceiling down by either lowering the fan or replacing it with a chandelier.

Have you considered adding in some new windows?

I would do the drapes how Flo showed. As for the rest IMO we need photos of what you are planning to have for furniture , that fan has to go for sure , I would paint the walls and ceiling all one color add a fab chandelier . I begin usually with the bed style and the bedding to make a bedroom feel how I want it. Beams above a bed are very bad feng shui and it is one of the things I find not pleasant. You do not want to call attention to that high ceiling if you want to cozy the space up. I would if at all possible add at least one more window. Could you post some bedrooms in your idea books to give us at least some insight into what you like.

@Flo Mangan That looks beautiful, thank you for mocking that up! I'd love to be able to keep the curtains and I think that looks nice.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting because of the wide angle it looks like the door and window are tiny in that one corner. The room isn't quite as long and windowless as it appears. There are two skylights that add natural light as well. But I would really love one more window in the future that provides a view in addition to light. Not sure why more were not added, since it overlooks the lovely backyard and patio.

Just select a photo. Scroll till you see a green box that says SAVE. Click on that. It should pull up screen where you can “create” new ideabook and give it name. Master Bedroom for example. It will automatically save that photo into your newly created Ideabook.

Great idea @nosoccermom. I can see how a large bed would help. Might have to consider a new frame or at least a taller headboard.

I looked at your Ideabook and lots of good ideas there. I do love the idea of a four post or canopy bed. But could you post the room dimensions, width of French doors and window etc.

I would absolutely go for a large (king or cal king) canopy bed in a warm wood tone. There's just something visually cozy about climbing into a canopy bed. I also think the warmth of wood adds a lot of coziness. Put some in some full length drapes to add more softness. Depending on if the room is as large as the realestate photos look, you could include an upholstered settee or sitting area to lend warmth as well. The room has really lovely bones. I hope you'll share your progress.

I think you have great bedroom ideas in your book pick the one you like the best and use it for inspiration. I love the one with the high headboard I like the mix of materials.

@Flo Mangan sorry for the delayed response. I now have the measurements to provide.

The room measures roughly 20 feet long and is 17 feet wide at the widest side, where the entrance is. But the rest of the room is slightly more narrow. The patio doors measure 6.5 feet wide. I don’t have the window measurement but I want to say it was about 2 feet wide.

I’ve attached the completely amateur measurements I took the last time we were in the house, and also another photo of the room from a different angle.

You have room for a chaise where I put two chairs. Personal choice. I only had trouble with the wall on right side with “opening”. The numbers didn’t quite work so that has to be verified. I used a standard with window for the small window if 28” wide. But overall, these items should work. I put a small ladies desk and chair as you come into room. A pretty lam on it with art or a mirror would be nice upon entering the room.

Just now reading this post...wanted to throw in another idea...if the pic is accurate the ceiling slope seems extreme...you may want to consider bringing the ceiling white down to regular wall height around the room...to bring the gray living space more into scale and separating the vaulted ceiling from the living space...
