painting bedroom - cutting in and ceiling touch up

Is it best to cut in the whole room, let it dry and then roll out the paint?

I am using SW Cashmere Flat and I have already cut in two walls, but am not sure if I should continue.

Also, while I was cutting in my first coat of paint I accidentally touched onto the ceiling a bit, should I go around the perimeter of my room with the leftover ceiling paint I have?

One last question. While rolling out my ceiling (the hardest thing to do in the world), I noticed I missed very minute spots on the stroke. Can I touch up by using a brush and feathering out the strokes to even out the look? I am using behr ceiling flat.

I'm just a DIYer, not a pro painter, and I have the same issues with applying paint that you appear to have. My responses would be:

-- Yes, cut in, dry, then roll

-- Yes, touch up the ceiling

-- Touchups of flat ceiling paint are a breeze. I went back with a roller where needed and also did some touch ups with a brush. You cannot see the touchups.

And I agree, there is nothing fun about rolling a ceiling. A couple years ago one of the pro painters here described how he painted a ceiling. He didn't use a ladder, he worked standing on the floor with the roller on the end of a pole. He described the process as walking the roller across the ceiling instead of standing in one place and moving his arms.

I'm a little scared of a store that doesn't have powdered Dirtex...AND INSTEAD recommeds the horrendously smelly "no sand"-type products. In fact, just today, I ordered another case of Dirtex for our freight next Tuesday. If I was doing your trim... * Lightly wash with the Dirtex. * Return the ungodly smelly Gloss-off. * Get a 100-grit sanding sponge, and do a thorough/even scuff-sanding of all trim. * Sand to an evenly dull surface. * NOTHING substitutes for the ACTUAL PHYSICAL PROFILE that a good sanding provides. * Use any decent wood-filler that will harden & is paintable. * Fill holes/dents SLIGHTLY proud, let dry, and carefully sand flush. * Remove every molecule of dust, and prime. If necessary, you can sand most primers, IF they've dried at least a half-day. NOW...you've got a clean, sanded, re-leveled, primed surface that will hold paint VERY WELL. Painter's-caulks...used for your exact project! (Check its dry-times) Practice running thin beads at the tops of the trim, inside corners, and where door/window casings meet the wall. Do you have any white paint lying around at home? Because what I'd do is paint the walls the aqua and paint the strip of ceiling white. Then if I didn't like that, for whatever reason, I'd take some of the leftover aqua paint and mix it with a bit of white, to tone it down a bit, and paint the ceiling with that. Then if I didn't like that look, I'd paint the ceiling full-strength aqua. Growing up in an 1880s Victorian, we all looked forward to moving up to the attic rooms when we were teens. All the rooms had sloping walls, with varying amounts of ceiling. My parents let us go a bit crazy with the paint. Just based on my experience, a tiny bit of white ceiling can look a bit odd if the wall color is dark. If the wall color is fairly light, the white ceiling doesn't stand out as much. If you want more than one color on the walls, you need to make the two colors very different colors, not shades of the same color. For example, one room was seafoam green on the slanted bits and dark faded red on the vertical bits and it actually looked pretty good. And there was the lime green and dark blue room, which again, looked better than you'd think. The darker color looks best on the vertical, with the lighter color on the sloped portions. Your daughter's room won't seem like an aqua cave if the floor, bedding, curtains and other accessories are different colors. Get some fun colors on the bed and floor and see what happens.

I am, also, of the opinion that a small room can be painted a darker color. What makes a light small room look smaller are the shadows in the corners. A dark color reflects less light blurring the edges of the room., By absorbing the light, "the walls of the room are less clearly marked and can give an illusion of more space." I would consider removing the crown molding, as it is one more thing defining the size of the room. Is there a light in the ceiling? Often a semi-flush up light gives the feeling of height.

I know in one topic, paintguy said to brush slightly into the ceiling when cutting in.

Have anyone tried this? It would help if I could see some picture samples.

Ok update. I finished the first coat of paint - rolling and cutting. It came out great.

I still need to do a second coat to cover up the underlying paint though. Is it easy to do a second coat of flat paint? What I mean is does the fact that I am using flat paint affect how the second layer of paint will go on?

The first coat went on like butter, but given that I had some trouble painting the ceiling in flat (behr ceiling flat), I am hesitant to try the second coat of SW paint on the walls.

Im still debating how I should approach fixing the cut in line. I did creep up into the ceiling slightly but my lines were not consistent. I am wondering if I should use an artist brush to create that straight line illusion.

Yes, an artist's brush will work if you didn't get too much paint in the wrong place. I have touched up the work of really bad painters and have used a 1.5 inch or 2 inch angled brush. They hold more paint than an artist's brush.

A second coat of paint is as easy as the first.

With flat, the second coat should go on like the first one. My experience with other finishes has been succeeding coats go on a little differently than the prior one, but it's not anything to worry about. SW is pretty good paint, so you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Stay away from the above mentioned paint and you will have no problems.The second coat should go on easier than the first and the more you do it the straighter you're ceiling lines will get.
