Sticky String Beans
Comments (4)I have had bush and string beans over the years. This is my first bush beans with sticky, velcro-like skin. A different variety than before and the individual leaves are larger. The Kentucky blue bush bean from previous years never had this stickiness. I have a Crepe myrtle tree close by, that drops small soft blossoms and they cling to my beans and make washing them a bit of a chore. The pole beans I had grown previously also had large leaves and very, very clingy, and what a mess, clothes gloves, shoes, everything, and not so much of a spiritual experience, more like an alien invasion. Next year I will be more careful about trying different varieties. I do not believe the Grocery Green beans are smooth from handling but from the variety grown. Comments (7)Yes, agree with LilBit, definitely means more water. I find that they need more water than most succulents. Mine is just some small cuttings from a store, and since they aren't in gritty mix either, I thought I would water them less and they soon became wrinkled and ill-looking for quite awhile....until I decided to water them few days in a roll and it was like filling water balloons with water. Comments (12)The soil shrank because it is full of peat that became hydrophobic. It is very difficult to rewet again, and you most likely overwatered it. So from one extreme to another. It has been underwatered, overwatered and maybe even burned if exposed to too much sunlight suddenly. Unfortunately, it really doesn't make much difference what store you buy the plant from - they all most likely keep plants in soil it came in from the grower. Even if they repot plants, they use similar potting media. I wonder about that hanging pot - usually, they have some drainage hole but it is raised. That creates shallow 'moat' that will keep excess soil, probably mucky if overwatered. Or there is no drainage, or there is a saucer attached that also slows down drainage. So all these combined will create bad conditions for plants. Plant should be taken out, all old soil should be taken off the roots. You may have to rinse/blast it off with a hose. If any strings have roots, they should be planted in well draining mix. Any dead roots and parts of plant/stems should be cut off - they won't come back to life. Healthy pieces could be stuck in a well draining mix. They could also be laid over the mix, making sure part of stem is touching the mix - put a small rock on it or pin it down so it stays in contact. they will eventually root. Do not use very deep pot, it holds too much soil/mix and if it is water retaining, makes things bad again. Hanging pots are best for these plants, but make sure there is good drainage. I use many of those pots, but drill extra holes all over the bottom - it will drain and drip water, so either keep somewhere where it doesn't matter, or use some kind of tray to catch it. You could also take it to the sink, water, let all excess water to drain for a while and then put in its place. If using Cactus&Succulent soil, get a bag of perlite. Sift or rinse it, and mix at least 50/50 with C&S soil. Comments (3)Hello & Pls stop worrying. A week is no time at all in plant time. I only know & grow String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii). You need to pls have some patience, likely to take 2-3 weeks or more to root in water. I wouldn't use a tall glass of water. Best to just keep an inch or so in the water, that's best not more. 4 years agoHere are some pics I took this morning. I have taken them out of the container and am going to repot them. They seemed less sticky than when I found them. All I have done so far is spray them off with some hose water. I still see some things have have me concerned though.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoYep I see mealy bugs. This is where they hide on this plant, right where the leaf connects to the stem.
You can use rubbing alcohol, but keep out of direct sun while you are using it. Spray about once a week until they’re gone. It will take more than one treatment because the bugs are at different stages, and you will always miss a few the first treatment. Be sure to check the roots and clean all the old soil off roots and clean the pot really well.
