String of Pearls turning brown - please help!
Comments (1)while repoting in spring would be a good idea, you can probably just spiral the strands around in the pot and they will root. You shouldn't let it dry out completely. It sounds like it needs some more frequent watering. It helps to understand the growth habit of that plant. Typically they are in hanging baskets, but they are really a creeping ground cover. When they are hanging down and really long it's pretty easy for them to sacrifice the old stem and leaves for the newer growth. I get strands that crap out fron the base regularly from all those similar Senecio species, for no apparent reason. The plant is pretty well adapted to falling down a bunch of rock and rooting the jumper in some crack thus forming a new plant....See Morecan I save this string of pearls?
Comments (3)It looks like you have extremely water retentive soil. Depending on how badly rotted the plant it's possible it can't be saved; What i'd recommend you try to do is swap out the dirt with cactus mix with 50/50 perlite thrown in. It'll keep water a LOT less than the soil you have right now and it'll help prevent your plants from rotting away....See MoreString of Pearls
Comments (5)I have had terrible luck with these plants. They always rot, even when I am careful to let them dry out between waterings. I think they do better in smaller pots with alot less soil, because of they have a shallow root system and in a typical pot they have all that wet soil below their roots that they can't possibly use up, so they rot. I'd use a mix of cactus and regular soil, add lots of perlite and orchid bark, and keep the plants in smaller shallower pots....See MoreString of Pearls Rescue
Comments (3)Cut the healthy strings off, compost the rest (including the media). Letting the strings dry for 24hrs is unnecessary, IME. I've grown SoP in several different medias successfully -- even regular (but good) potting soil. Your AV mix should be fine. Of course if you have a lot of strings, you could experiment and try several small pots -- each with a different mix or mix ratio....See Morerina_Ontario,Canada 5a
