Bedroom Redo! Pics! Need more advice.
Comments (8)First of all, please don't take offense to my "fussiness"! :) I have a friend who is an interior designer and she has tried to teach me a thing or two because I need help all the time! I'll start with the dresser. I agree with too much stuff on the dresser. To me it would look much better without the boat and the jar of rocks is way too tall and out of scale. Maybe put the wooden box next to the two candles and the picture by itself on the right side, and take the boat and rocks out completely. Think about the "weight" of the items and try to balance your arrangement. I always use the rule: "one, three, but never two" for groupings. Its the same in landscaping...amazing what a difference it makes. I would also paint the dresser black. Other suggestions I would make is to paint the ceiling area where the red chair is the same color as your walls. If your space allows I would reposition the chair so that it is not stuck angled perfectly in the corner, and I would remove that little table and put it to the right of your bed with a lamp on it, because your bed with window looks a bit out of balance, and the little table just looks out of scale in the chair area and as if it doesn't belong there. Also might think about painting the little table one of your accent colors. If you're going to use cream, white, and green in there I would stick with black or deep chocolate as another accent color and forget red altogether. It would be nice to see something in the room that wasn't "square", ...maybe something round on the wall like a big clock. Maybe the red is throwing me off. You have not repeated it anywhere else in the room so the room is not tied together. I think with accent colors you need to repeat them two or three times. Your black frames look great in there. Black is a good accent color for the room. Don't know about the red at all. With your green pillows it looks like you are trying to go "monochromatic" and the red throws it totally out of kilter. Maybe you have nothing else to use like most of us so could even look into draping the chair with something or also cushion covers. Sorry don't mean to tear your room apart! It's lovely. Sometimes just changing a few things can make all the difference in the world! That's just my two cents! Good luck! You're doing a great job! :)...See MoreUpdate: Guest bedroom yellow no more
Comments (11)Thanks everyone! cherigw, I did like the yellow, but after awhile I started to feel it was almost like a children's room. Maybe it's the trend lately with the warm greys, but I always like greyed colors in general. Honestly, I liked the yellow in late afternoon but hated it in the morning. If I were to paint yellow again, I would make sure it's not lemony but more like EK Honeysuckle or Restoration Hardware Butter, which I have in my kitchen. My mom's whole apt.(my basement) is yellows so I feel I have yellow in there as well. After seeing Pirula's photos of her bedroom I knew I wanted something similar. It was either between off white and Stony ground. Stony ground won out because it was a bit deeper in color for the bright sunlit room. Thanks everyone again. I feel like I finally got a color right! I was feeling so down on myself because I wasn't 100% thrilled with my living room choice....See MoreWhat makes a bedroom a bedroom?
Comments (7)Thanks, I checked the building code and I don't think it counts as a bedroom. The key concept in the code is that it needs to be enclosed, which would be easy enough to do if we had to, but then there are rules about close proximity to a bathroom and the only bathroom on the floor is the master bath and you have to go through the master bedroom to get to the master bath. I don't think that would fit the rules. I think it would be considered a bonus room or a den. I'm still debating about the appraisal. I can get a independent appraisal done for $200. The bank that currently holds our first mortgage charges $475 for the appraisal for a refinance. I don't want to pay that much to be told that the property hasn't rebounded enough. It may be worth it to me to pay $200 for an opinion on the current value....See MoreUpdate on bedroom and a few more ?
Comments (13)Thanks :) I will take the stuff off the top of the bookcase since that seems to be a clear consensus! schoolhouse, I definitely see the appeal of framing the art, all of the art in my other house is framed. In this case, I kind of like the pictures standing alone. I feel like any frames would make them heavier and I'm trying to lighten the room up w/ the art b/c of all the heavier formal furniture :) Maybe (hopefully) that works and they don't just look unfinished! It is amazing what a change can come from just altering a few little things....See MoreLaura Villar
