Advice with color of stain

We would greatly appreciate your advice with stain color. We recently put a wood floor in that’s light to medium brown in color. We have now tackled painting and we’re wondering about the mantle and banister color. They are slightly on the red side so we thought we would choose a medium, slightly darker brown stain for the railing and mantle. Do you have any ideas for a nice brown stain? Thank you!

More specifically, I was wondering if anyone has used a Varathane stain, such as dark walnut, Kona, or Espresso or similar and would recommend one of those colors for our mantle and banister. (We don’t know if one of those dark colors would be too dark.) We appreciate your input with this!

I think that the mantel and bannister look fine the way they are now. They are a bit darker than the floor, but that adds interest to the spaces. I'm curious as to why you want to re-stain them.

Are you asking about concrete stain or wood stain? If you are asking about a solid stain for wood - I have used Olympic Solid Color Stains (for decks, fences, siding) with excellent results. It hides the woodgrain, allowing the texture to show thru (taken off the brochure). We added to the existing deck that runs across the back of our house, removed a screen porch, changed the railing - added additional support, etc - on a budget. The previous owners had never cleaned or stained the wood. We tried to use a transparent stain, but it showed all the different new & old woods. The Solid stain covered it all, made it look the same, fresh, and clean. That has been about 8 years ago. I power wash lightly to keep it clean, and reapply the solid stain as needed mostly to the floor (about every 2 years), where furniture scrapes across it - snow shovels, etc. It takes alot of abuse. We used the Cape Cod Gray. While we are in the Northeast, we do live on the water, and the wind and salt and tree sap is a factor.

With all the dark pieces white sounds like a good idea. As for the coffee table, glass might be a great idea to give the room some sparkle and light up some of the heaviness. Don't worry, you can still put your feet on it, especially if you get the kind that has a metal surround. The kind that also has a lower glass shelf is great for putting books, remote controls, magazines and other things you want nearby without cluttering the top (you need the top for your feet!).

What color to paint/stain banister rails?

I'm seeking advice on what color to stain/paint my banister rails. The carpet in the photo is staying for now (may refinish stairs), but the downstairs flooring is being replaced with Coretec Spirit Oak (see photo). The walls will be painted SW Zurich White (see photo), and the trim, doors, cabinets, etc. will be painted SW Pure White. I will likely paint the spindles SW Pure White, but I'm wondering if I should stain the rails light to match the floors or dark for contrast? I thought about staining them to match the exposed beams (see photo) in two rooms of the home, but those rooms aren't within view of the stairs, so I'm not sure it matter. I welcome any and all advice.

I like the dark stain on the new gates. The color blends well with the brick, and it may fade so it’s not quite so dark. I agree with you on the grey/green as it does not blend with the brick.

I agree they are fine as is. Once all your stuff is in place you will find it has a different feel .

I also agree, they are fine the way they are. Just finish up and get everything in place. I would not restain them. Its hard to get stain to look decent, when its already stained anyway, so the way they are is much better.

I appreciate the advice. I just thought with the mantle having a bit more red than the floor along with a gray wall, that restraining would give it a more cohesive, finished look. I also thought the darker bannister, especially would give that space a “richer” look.
