What tree/s to put in my yard in St.Louis MO?
Comments (32)J0nd03- that ft.mcnair is a beautiful tree. Ill have to see what the specs are on it as far as tolerances/preferences. Tornado- no offense taken at all, I'm quite long winded myself (I am a car salesman!) and I love taking politics but unfortunately from what I have learned (perhaps its the area we live in?) most discussions about politics/govt matters turn into a pissing contest/yelling match because when someone has a differeing view than I yet cannot support their claims/reasons for their beliefs they get defensive and resort to un civilized behavior. I think it's hilarious but sure you have experenced it as well! ;) I really appreciate the info your giving me. From what I have read/picked up from folks (a good friend of mine is a horticulture major/landscape business owner) these beech trees will maintain their vibrant foliage as long as they are kept hydrated. I'm site the tree in your pics gets pruned/pest control done professionally and regularly but I'm not sure about the watering part too much?...See MoreWhat tree is it? What wrong with the tree?
Comments (3)it is a conifer ... and they hold their leaves/needles.. from one to 3 years ... the oldest leaves are interior ... and as they age.. and get shaded by newer growth ... they yellow and fall off ... in snow country.. it can be increased significantly by a bad winter .. of which. seattle doesnt have ... just fyi .. or severe drought the summer before.. which again.. you wouldnt have ... it is entirely normal ... when your current growth tips yellow ... and then brown.. is when you have problems to think or worry about ... ken btw: if you track from the tip.. in toward the trunk.. the bark changes per year ... so you could probably SEE/estimate .... how old those leaves are ......See MoreWhat trees to plant?
Comments (22)Deer sample plants to find out if they are possible foods. So that there is some damage even when particular kinds are not on the existing menu*. With each new generation of fawns seeming likely to try a lot of things. Otherwise what is eaten varies with weather conditions, with heavy snowfalls producing pressures to find browse that are not there the rest of the time. Cottontail rabbits will also browse kinds like small conifers and deciduous shrubs during snow, clip conifer branches for nesting material. And during the rut bucks strip bark and branches from accessible young trees whether they are kinds that are browsed or not - the only sure guarantee against all of the preceding is effective fencing. Otherwise the effort, money and time put into plantings is then left subject to whatever the involved animals happen to do. *One day I saw an adult doe who was standing and looking around with her head near where some bigleaf maple leaves were hanging down from above pick and eat them. As though her response to the situation was since the leaves were right there anyway she might as well have some. Even though most of the time this and other maples are never browsed here....See MoreWhat tree is this?
Comments (12)Beautiful tree! It's still on the youthful side and will get a lot bigger over time. Redwood surface roots can grow up to 3-1/2 ft. in diameter over time, so what you're seeing with lifting is most likely just the beginning. That said: I would talk to someone from your local municipality. They would have better advice about these things and reasons why and/or why not a tree like this should be cut, or maybe even other options to remedy your situation. A tree inspection may be necessary to see if there are any other issues with the tree, like rot or disease. The link below has some information about removal costs and permits (I am not associated with this company; it's linked here simply as a source of information). https://www.gotreequotes.com/how-much-does-tree-removal-cost/redwood/#:~:text=Whether%20you%20need%20a%20permit,can%20be%20removed%20or%20not. And here's a video showing some Sequoia s. being cut for what becomes obvious later in the video as being rot at the base of the trees and the close proximity to structures.
