What tree is it? What wrong with the tree?

I think it's some kind of pine tree or similar tree with needle leaf. But it's turn yellow from inside. It's in Zone8.

It looks like a type of Juniper. Junipers shed their older growth. The tree looks fine to me.

it is a conifer ... and they hold their leaves/needles.. from one to 3 years ...

the oldest leaves are interior ... and as they age.. and get shaded by newer growth ... they yellow and fall off ...

in snow country.. it can be increased significantly by a bad winter .. of which. seattle doesnt have ... just fyi .. or severe drought the summer before.. which again.. you wouldnt have ...

it is entirely normal ...

when your current growth tips yellow ... and then brown.. is when you have problems to think or worry about ...

btw: if you track from the tip.. in toward the trunk.. the bark changes per year ... so you could probably SEE/estimate .... how old those leaves are ...

More water. It's still living on the pot roots system..and the ground is wicking away the water. You're in a dry hot climate..water -build a well around it,and keep it mulched on planting is the no.1 priority. Your are correct also that Mangoes sold often don't have root balls knitted together yet and I know some people have had the whole ball of soil fall apart when slid out of the pot. THAT is a major setback.

Thanks Ken, I do monitor the soil moisture. It’s about 30% right now. That little blue cap you see is the sensor. I also check it manually with another sensor. we’re you thinking it might have too much water? Or not enough? the instructions I have for the fertilizer is to add 1lb per inch of trunk thickness at ground level. That’s why I added 3lbs

Whatever it is, a chunk of bark that big falling off to expose the yellowish cambium is NOT a good sign. Can you post a closeup of the foliage? Actually I just thought of something. Are these trees usually evergreen? There are forms of Chinese Lacebark Elm that are evergreen in mild climates, which Houston normally is. This tree could not only have been in leaf, but in a semi-state of growth, when it was blasted by the cold wave. The temps well below freezing could have caused a type of extreme scald damage to the trunk. It literally peeled off due to the formation of ice. If that is what happened... although it's a very tough species, I assume the tree will continue to slowly decline and should be replaced eventually.

However branches shown in third shot particularly ARE shedding excessively, with only tiny sections at the ends of some of them still green. Drought effects carrying over from last summer? Bothered by wetter than normal April we had this year? Under attack by honey fungus? Chemical application to the soil around it, such as fertilizer or herbicide? Often when trees and shrubs show marked crown deterioration it is because of something that has happened to the roots - As The Roots Go, So Goes The Top.
