Japanese beetles- best way to get rid of them?
Comments (23)JB are a real problem in the coastal south east. The grubs feed on grass roots. Then the moles feed on the grubs. These 2 activities alone cause majore damage to lawns. Add to that the neighbors dog trying to track down the moles by digging up the yard. Thats 3 forms of damage just in the larval stage. I read about a product several years ago called "Milky Spore" I never used it due to the high cost, at that time I had very little to spend. Milky spore is said to be a biological agent that will cause death to it's off spring and lasts for many years in the soil. Sort of like a parasitic attack I think. The article I read was from my local extension service. I have seen the product on shelves in the stores. The article mentioned this product works best when used community wide. If you have killed off the grubs in your yard thats good. But you can still have problems with the adults flying in from the neighbors yards. So why don't I use it now? well I don't live on the coast and they are not a problem here....See MoreBest way to get rid of maple key infestation
Comments (11)I get them, too. Thousands of them. As stated above, they are no trouble in the lawn. Once decapitated, they don't come back. Try to pull them out of the garden beds before they get more than four or so leaves - they very quickly develop a root system and yanking them later, although easier, will disturb the soil around your plants. They will sprout in damp mulch but do come out very easily. I've even had them grow in just a tiny bit of guttercrud in the eavestroughs. These things seem endless but are usually conquered by end of June :)...See MoreWhat's the best way to get rid of bindweed???
Comments (219)I have lots and lots of bindweed all in my pachysandra and have come up with a solution to killing it without killing the pachysandra. I do use round up on the foam spray setting. First I gather up as many strands as I can in one clump andI put in into a slit in paper plate that I have cut one slit to the middle. It opens easily to put the bindweed on the plate . Then I spray it on the plate carefully using the foam setting. When dry I remove the plate and leave the weed for several weeks so it can get dead to the root. I will also try this on creeping Charlie. I have also used canes for the bindweed to crawl up and also tried putting a clump in a Baggie and the spray inside bag with roundup. That works but the paper plate is so much easier.Hope this helps someone else. I feel like I am going to get control after several years and hundreds or thousands of these vines!! lenette...See MoreWhat's the best way to rid a bad mealy spell short of using bayer 3n1
Comments (10)but the plant is currently outside, where he wants to keep it until the mealybug situation is resolved. putting that bayer stuff on the plant while outside is part of the problem. thankfully, he seems to want to avoid doing that. i don't know if that 30 day estimation is correct. some of those products last 12 months, according to the label on the actual bayer package label AND the product name. 30 days or not, the plant still might have to come inside to avoid exposing pollinators to that rough insecticide - and that may be before the bugs and their eggs, are dead. i say repot and THOROUGHLY clean. he'd probably need to cut some of the plant as well....See Moregordon cashmore
