Greetings from RoseLadyV-- oldtimers, are you still here?
Comments (27)How old do you have to be to be an "oldtimer"? Yes, I still lurk on occassion and remember RLV well and miss your posts. I am still growing the beautiful Love's Promise you sent me some time ago. I still have the same old Kodak digital camera I got because you used to post such beautiful rose pictures with yours. Glad to hear all is well with you. Hope you are still writing. Hello to everyone else on the forum. It might be interesting if people posted pics of their garden then and now for comparison. I know in my case the trees are a lot larger, the deer population is much greater and we have been in a no watering drought for ever. Still, I have managed to keep things alive and this time of year the roses are tall enough that the deer can't reach the blooms. For those who remember my Betty Priors from Wayside, they were virused and finally declined to the point that they were replaced by KOs last year....See Morewho's still here?
Comments (25)I stop by, but it seems it is usually pretty slow here, so I don't stop by as much as the other more active forums. I live on 25 acres in northwest Wa state in a small valley. We have chickens, a few sheep, and a llama. We are planning on raising either pigs or steer for meat next year. I'm a pretty lazy homesteader... I like to pretend but don't get everything done I'd like to. That's ok though, as the great part is I can do it when i want to. I'm a terrible housekeeper as well, something I think no real homesteader would allow. I'd just rather do the fun stuff. Currently time to pick blackberries to make pies, and can pie filling and jam... won't be long till it's time for the apples and plums. I havn't gotten my raised veggie beds done this year (you wouldn't believe the rocks we have, I thought raised beds would help) so no veggie harvest this year. Next year I hope to put in an herb and veggie garden. Of course, I plant new fruit and nut trees every year. I want to plant blueberries next year too! And rasberries. Most of my gardening effort goes to my ornamental garden... so I'm a pretty poor homesteader indeed! I'm in love with Old fashioned varieties of roses, as well as waterlilies, iris, and peonies. We have a pond, so I can catch bass when I feel like it. There is a river also, and if you are quick enough when the salmon run, you can grab a few before they get too bad (they pretty much start to rot alive when they spawn... and we are pretty far up the river... so you have to be picky.)....See MoreWho's still here?
Comments (15)i'm new here too and i have a new garden in a new place i also have two new hip replacements (actually one is 2 yrs old and the other is about 10 weeks old) i live south of houston texas so i should be able to garden throughout the year problems i'm facing besides lack of agility are deer-at least a million of them -- who stroll through yards in herds upwards of 20 and eat everything in sight....almost they even eat 35 year old live oak trees (hanging branches) other big problem is rain and i mean lots of it, gumbo (very sticky hard clay) and forthcoming are the swarms of mosquitoes and heat (it doesn't cool down much at night here) should i stop now i think i'm so addicted i can't.... in november we transplanted 2 citrus, a mandarin orange and a 20 year old meyers lemon wh o had been in a pot all it's life we added expanded shale and raised bed soil and the old plant has been blooming since mid december, the mandarin orange had a huge bloom cycle about a month ago (early march) and then dropped all leaves and the tips of some branches are dying i don't like the looks of it maybe just too much rain.......anyway i've added a new meyer lemon and a rio red grapefruit and they appear to be doing well since i also have to be so selective about which plants i can use because of the deer and i love bees and butterflies i've added the following about a dozen types of salvia, butterfly weed, lantana, dill, fennel, basil, parsley, and a small bay tree, lemon balm, rosemary, chives, mexican mint marigold, thyme, cuphea, poinciana, and some accidental berry vines and some containerized mint and some tomatoes i also have some endless summer hydrangeas, a banana shrub and 2 camellias so far the deer have walked up and sniffed a few times and turned and walked away, i hope that continues i'm planting in two raised beds and have plans for several more (trees are not in the two beds ) the lot is close to 5 acres but i'm trying to keep my gardening down to maybe an 8th of an acre i love the look of a kitchen garden and hope to hear what everyone is planting and "see their efforts" (unfortunately we are living in the dark ages at our house and have only trac phones which we rarely use, so i can't post photos yet........See MoreHead Count/Roll Call: Who is still here? Comments (92)Thank you all so much for your replies! It's wonderful to see so many of you slogging through the Houzz changes in order to remain in touch, sharing your words and your photos. I hope others continue to chime in as they check in with the forum in between scheduled summer activities and in spite of current technological difficulties. Titian, thank you for the information about Florence's last posting. I may have missed it since it was located on a thread which began with another topic. I wish there were some way to reach her just to say how much it meant to share the exchanges that we did. We even shared family history and photos and artwork. Mary, I have no idea if Houzz ambushed the Furniture Forum with my post after the fact or whether I neglected to deselect the FF as a suggested cross posting site. I THOUGHT I deselected everything but Antique Roses. Since we will never know, and I prefer to maintain the fantasy that I can manage my own affairs, I'm going to cry "Houzz ambush" in order to save face. :-) Carol...See More- 4 years ago
