Comments (38)I wondered how long it would be before someone brought up the fearful spectre of ASSAULT WEAPONS! AUTOMATIC KILLER HYPER DEADLY MACHINES O'DEATH IN THE HANDS OF JOHN Q. PUBLIC! Certainly sounds good when a politican, who looks grieviously concerned, starts talking about ASSAULT WEAPONS as if they are single root cause of all society problems, right? Only problem is... It's a lie. Or, as Winston Churchill once put it, a "terminological inexactitude." Why is that? Because when a politician or newscaster starts yammering about "ASSAULT RIFLES!", he's not talking about the rifles carried by the men and women who comprise our military. Our military forces carry true assault rifles, which are capable of either fully automatic or three-shot burst fire AND semi-automatic (one shot fired per pull of the trigger) fire. No, when a politican starts talking about ASSAULT RIFLES!, he's actually a well-thought out lie to engage the hysterical emotions of people who don't know better. Why? Because the vast majority of the firearms that politicans call "ASSAULT RIFLES!" are, in fact, NOT assault rifles. The so-called "ASSAULT RIFLES!" that I own, and shoot, are in fact semi-automatic rifles that LOOK like the firearms carried by the members of our military. They're not capable of fully automatic fire, never have been, and never will be. Yes, it is true that there are true assault rifles in the hands of some civilians. However, here's some facts that you may not know. 1. These true assault rifles and other fully automatic weapons are HIGHLY regulated by the Federal goverment (and have been since 1934) and, in some cases, by the states. No one here can simply walk into a local gun store and buy one of these guns. 2. The application process to own a true assault rifle or other fully automatic weapon is months long and requires a full government background check, including a fingerprint search. 3. True assault rifles are prohibitively expensive, depending on the model $5,000 to as much as $100,000, putting them in the realms of collectors, not the average scumbag who is intent on knocking off the local Gas and Gulp. 4. In 1994, Congress passed, and Bill Clinton signed into law, an act regulating "ASSAULT RIFLES!" This law expired in 2004. What was the effect of this act? According to the FBI, nothing. No reduction in any crime of any kind. Why? Because rifles are used in very few crimes in this country. So, do the politicans who get all concerned about "ASSAULT RIFLES!" know all of this? Of course they do, and yet it doesn't matter to them, because their intent isn't to cut down on crime. Their intent is to look all concerned and prey on the fears of people who don't know better. If these politicans were TRULY interested in making America safer, what would then then do? They'd stump for laws to more harshly punish those who do commit crimes. Oddly enough, though, these very politicans often have the most criminal friendly voting records in Congress. Odd how that works, isn't it?...See MoreAny one have an automatic ice cream maker?
Comments (21)I have a wolfgang puck ice cream maker that has a built in compressor. I love it. I bought if off of ebay and it was cheaper than buying the cuisinart model that had the compressor. One word of caution. They are quite heavy and really shouldn't be moved around very much, especially not tipped or tilted. If that happens you have to wait a day or two, for the machine to stabilize before using. Other than that it works great, and you can continuously make ice cream in it. Claire de luna, I found this article online and saved it. The poster claims that it's not the cooking process but the eggs that affect the ice cream. The woman's ice creams are supposed to be amazing. I am going to try this the next time I make ice cream. I am making an olive oil basil ice cream for work with a strawberry balsamic glaze for the topping. (its a contest we have monthly). Anyways here's the post I saved. "We followed the recipe for her vanilla bean ice cream, adding some chopped flakes of dark chocolate while churning. Here are our thoughts: The texture of this ice cream was amazing!! It was soft, rich, and creamy. Where our eggless ice creams are usually icy and hard, this was incredibly soft and velvety. The process of simmering down the cream and whisking in a little cornstarch was much easier and faster than our usual custard process. We did overcook the cornstarch a bit; you can see how thick our "pudding" was. This gave the ice cream a little too much flavor of cornstarch. But this wasn't too noticeable; our taste testers raved over it. The addition of cream cheese for scoopability and softness is brilliant; it gives the ice cream just a slight tang, but not a noticeable flavor. It does seem to affect softness a lot. Vanilla Bean Ice Cream Recipe by Jeni Britton This exceptionally creamy ice cream relies on two unexpected ingredients: cornstarch (to help thicken it) and cream cheese (to make it more scoopable). 2 cups whole milk 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1 1/2 ounces cream cheese, softened (3 tablespoons) 1 1/4 cups heavy cream 2/3 cup sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt Directions Fill a large bowl with ice water. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of the milk with the cornstarch. In another large bowl, whisk the cream cheese until smooth. In a large saucepan, combine the remaining milk with the heavy cream, sugar, corn syrup and vanilla bean and seeds. Bring the milk mixture to a boil and cook over moderate heat until the sugar dissolves and the vanilla flavors the milk, about 4 minutes. Off the heat, gradually whisk in the cornstarch mixture. Return to a boil and cook over moderately high heat until the mixture is slightly thickened, about 1 minute. Gradually whisk the hot milk mixture into the cream cheese until smooth. Whisk in the salt. Set the bowl in the ice water bath and let stand, stirring occasionally, until cold, about 20 minutes. Strain the ice cream base into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturers instructions. Pack the ice cream into a plastic container. Press a sheet of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the ice cream and close with an airtight lid. Freeze the vanilla ice cream until firm, about 4 hours. Comments (84)Debbie, I do live very near (less than 2 miles) from the most violent city in the country. It's ghetto from one end to the other, there are no good sections of this city left where decent people can live. It IS very scary. The info I posted was absolutely FIRST HAND, and only the tip of the iceberg. You see, I used to teach in that city and my husband is a utility company bill collector who visits these people in their homes. If you think what I posted is scary, you'd be absolutely terrified if you ever actually saw the city. Back on topic--sadly, the people who live there are 4-5-6th generation welfare families. Most don't have or remember any relatives who worked for a living. Collecting welfare, food stamps, and other forms of assistance IS the family business. They have no education, and honestly--many don't know that it's NOT good for their children to be fed bbq potato chips and soda for breakfast. My state is spending an unbelievable amount to keep these people going, keeping them housed, fed, cool, stocked with phones, etc. I think in this discussion, we have to remember that there are 2 very distinct groups of people who get food stamps and other assistance. I don't think anyone here has a problem with offering short-term help to those who have hit a temporary bump in the road. That's what the system is for and I think we're all glad the aid is there for those folks. But it's abominable that those of us who work hard, scrimp at home, save coupons, wear old clothes, don't use air-conditioning, who limit the size of our families to numbers we can support---then have to turn around and pay huge amounts in taxes to subsidize those who are content to scam the system unnecessarily. That's the thing that those of us who are upset are complaining about....See More- 6 years ago
