The best way to wash is to lather and turn off water while washing. That way you won't be tempted to hurry to save water.

Normally, I advocate to turn off the water while lathering and scrubbing/rubbing the hands. The problem with turning off the water while making sure you're as safe as can be from the corona virus is that if you did have the virus on your hand/fingers when you turned ON the water, when you touch the handle to turn OFF the water, you will likely get the virus back onto your hand/fingers. That's why many of the videos show hands touching the faucet to turn it on, lathering/washing while the water is running, then getting a clean dry paper towel to dry the hands, and using the towel to turn off the faucet.

So, I think if you don't have the water running "full force" but more slowly, it will take longer to wash the soap off your hands, but you'll waste less water and won't run the risk of reinfecting your hands as long as you use a paper towel to turn off the faucet.

And you don't need to wash your hands for five minutes! I think the recommendation is 20 seconds, and this video was 45 seconds.

Many home faucets are controlled with a lever. What we do is that for those, there's a dirty side - the side you push when turning on the water- and a clean side - the side you push to turn it off. If you control it with a push rather than a hand grab, you can save a paper towel each time you wash your hands.

Faucets with two levers are just as easy to handle the same way as a single lever. Unless the handles are 20 years old and round.
