Do I have to re-pot golden pothos?

Hello everyone,

My sister has a golden pothos plant that she absolutely loves. I last re-potted it from a two-inch pot into a four-inch pot about two years ago. She likes the size that it is now, so I was wondering:

1. Do I have to re-pot it at all?

2. Do I have to re-pot it in a bigger pot?

3. If I do have to re-pot it, can I leave it in the same size pot it is in now?

4. If I do have to re-pot it, can it wait another year or two, or should it be done now?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No, you can let it go as long as you want. Only repot when it starts going downhill (or better yet, add some extra soil to the top as the old soil is used up.

2. Do I have to re-pot it in a bigger pot?

No, only use a bigger pot if you want a bigger plant.

3. If I do have to re-pot it, can I leave it in the same size pot it is in now?

Yes, you can use the same pot. Why not?

4. If I do have to re-pot it, can it wait another year or two, or should it be done now?

That is totally up to you.

The one thing I do want to stress is do not allow this to run up your wall as the tendrils will attach to the paint and will make a mess when you decide to take it down. I did this many years ago and it looks nice UNTIL we took it down. We had to scrape the wall where the tendrils were deeply embedded and then mud the wall to even it up before applying new paint.

My pothos (or philodendron) has been in this coir lined basket for years. I top off the surface every other year or so.

another pothos that I cut off the long vines when it is time to bring it indoors for winter. It has been in this pot for at least five years.

I put this Philodendron Brasil in an urn many years ago. I don't water it much and when I do, it is a light watering. Very easy plant.

A bigger pothos that I put in a bigger container and allowed it to run up a tree one summer. The leaves get a lot bigger if allowed to run up a vertical object (usually trees in nature)

I totally agree w/ that list AND that warning. Also not a good idea to let them grow into your carpet. lol! I have more than a couple of these and I keep them in 4" pots too. If they need a refresh I just start new ones, rather than repot old ones.

When you noticed teh plant was droopy, was the soil wet or dry? Plants can look wilted either from underwatering OR from their roots rotting because they were overwatered and the roots were suffocated by the excess water. One good thing about pothos is that it grows very easily in plain water (it may seem strange, but a pothos plant can survive more easily in pure water than in overly wet soil). You might want to try clipping some stems and putting them in a glass of water to make sure you don't lose the whole plant while trying to save the potted one. Make sure to include part of the stem that has those brown nubbins on it - those nubbins are where new roots will form. I have always had the experience that some plants that people say are "easy" are tricky for me, while I can grow some plants that others say are "hard" without any special effort. That's what the link on the word "here" is above, a search for "fungus gnats" in this forum. The one I suggested was recent, and had advice from you, Rhizo, near the top. Another vote for getting rid of peat, had no idea what Vigoro was. Since I've gotten rid of peat, even before catching on to the 'more chunky soil' thing, so many fewer plants have died, and now it's extremely rare at all with the chunky soil. Stocking back up over the past few years on so many that I'd killed before and finally they look great although I still can't stop adding more water to plants that don't really need it yet, at least while they're outside for summer and it's so easy and fun to do. Fungus gnats are extremely unlikely to find this type of soil a suitable environment for breeding. Not had issues with those since changing either.

Gwendolyn, You're lucky because pothos are a very easy plant to grow. The biggest mistake people make when repotting is to use too big of a pot. If you have just one stem of pothos, I'd go for a 4 to 5 inch pot, depending on the size of the root system. You can use either terra cotta or plastic, whatever you prefer. Choose a good indoor potting mix. I usually mix my own, but for one plant that isn't practical. I've bought the Miracle Grow Organic indoor potting mix and found it works rather well. A indicator of good potting soil is the weight of the bag. Usually, the lighter the better. Avoid Hyponics soil. It's garbage. When it comes time to move the plant to the pot, be gentle. Put something like a scrap of nylons or window screen in the bottom of the pot so the soil doesn't fall through. Then put in some soil. Place the roots in and fill around the roots. Remember to leave about a half inch of space at the top of the pot so you can water. When the plant is in position go ahead and water. The soil will compress as the air holes are filled with soil. Make sure after you water that there is no water in the bottom saucer. Most plants don't like to sit in water. Water again when the soil is dry about an inch down from the top of the soil. It may take awhile to dry out because your plant doesn't have a very large root system yet and isn't transpiring a great deal. Be patient and water only when necessary. Good luck. When you repotted, did you see the roots on the small plant? The wilting sounds like it doesn't have a large enough root system to support the number of leaves on the plant. If bagging helps, you'll have to leave it in there until it develops a bigger root system. If you can get that plant back out of the pot without too much fuss, you could put it in a glass of water to revive and form more roots. It also might be easier to bag this small plant in it's own pot rather than the whole bigger pot with both plants. Dave could be right regarding the very crunchy mix with orchid bark, it might not be retaining enough water to support the weak plant. I think strong plants would adapt to the mix you've used, if it was mine I'd just separate the little one and deal with it separately. Let us know what you decide to do, and if bagging the pot helps to plump the little plant back up. Dave, that's a great close-up of your bark, it looks much like the pine bark mulch I'm getting from Walmart. But 'The Water Saver' pine bark by Fafard I get from a wholesale nursery is finer, I think. If I can get a closeup pic of both I'll send to you for comparison with what you have. Russ
