GE is a good one for the garage. They say theirs work there. I bought their upright last year and it has been fine.

I love our small freezer (although I do have it in the house). There is only the two of us but it's so nice to be able to buy extra things that come on sale or a big box of frozen skinless chicken breast or a roast etc. I have a ham in the freezer for Easter as we speak. Not having to go out as often during this coronavirus event it also blessing.

We have a small chest freezer. We love having it. It's just the two of us, but we've never found that there is more in the freezer than we can use in a reasonable amount of time. I think part of whether or not it makes sense for you depends on how often you cook meals for yourself. We cook a lot, so for us, it works.

I think that chest freezers are not very expensive to buy or to run.

We got a small chest freezer a couple of years ago when son stupidly killed a wild hog and had no place to store it. I fought getting one because I didn't want to have it in the garage. So we wound up putting it in my sewing/art studio. Now I'm glad we have it - it's just right for the 2 of us. Whenever I make a Sam's run or see a really good sale I stock up on the meat. BTW the hog meat was awful and I gave it away to one of these good ol' cracker boys around here. Son had split it with us and the part that he took got thrown away after they found they couldn't eat it.

I live alone and have a small upright in the house. I really like having it. It's just so much more convenient to shop my freezer than to run to the store all the time. I don't really stock up on sales, but it gets filled during summer berry season so I can make jam when the weather cools. And fruit for winter cobblers and an occasional pie. Of course, I keep frozen meat and some things like a stash of black bean taquitos for my grandson, extra butter and all the nuts I buy go into the freezer, things like that.

I live alone too and have often thought of getting a small one. I have looked before at Home Depot and liked the size of their small ones. So far though, I have gotten along with just the refrigerator freezer.

What are "good ol' cracker boys?" Not heard that expression before.

My single brother has a small chest freezer for years that he appreciates. But you have to be very good about organizing it. DH and I have an upright freezer, manual defrost, that we appreciated for years. It's easier to organize and access items. But even with the upright being manual-defrost, a chest freezer is even more efficient.

There's just two of us, but I love to watch sales, and also freeze soups, etc. I have a large upright freezer in the garage, and last year, I got a 7 cu.ft. chest freezer. Both are full. It's really nice, because I seldom go to the grocery store, and always have a nice variety of foods.

My best friend recently bought a 2.8 cu.ft. upright freezer for her apartment--she loves it, and is really glad to have it now! She got it from Amazon.com for $250.

I second the make certain it can be used in the garage. Manufactures may both types. Friend found out the hard way when the outside had so much water condense on it that it ran into some boxes of things she had saved for years.

We have an old Monkey Wards upright circa 1988 that I inherited from my parents. It stays pretty full year round with frozen garden goodies and meat that I buy when there is a good sale. I do worry about the freezer giving up the ghost (knocking on wood!) so I want to get another for backup.

Me and 2 friends went in on a small herd of Hereford cattle a couple years ago and plan to take 2 of the first steer offspring and one old cow that refuses to calf to the Amish butcher in a couple months. I've been saving up rewards points from our credit card to purchase a 15 cu/ft chest freezer. I'll cash the points in for a HD gift card. I've got about $350 worth of points now and need 100-150 more to cover the entire cost.

I live alone, and couldn't get by without my small upright freezer. I buy beef by the quarter, and then hit store sales for ham, poultry, etc. Not to mention when I cook and portion half for a later use. Very handy!

Have a small 5 cubic feet freezer purchased from Home Depot quite a number of years ago. Could not do without it. Live alone now. I do have it in the laundry room in the house. It is the upright, not the chest. Personally, I would not have a chest freezer.

We had a nice size upright freezer we bought from a neighbor that was moving. Unfortunately it died about a year ago. I would like to get a replacement. We have 2 refrigerators that have smaller freezer areas. When we go to Louisiana I like to stock up on the products we love, lots of smoked meat and sausage. We don't have enough space in our current arrangement.

We need to go to the Sears outlet and buy a new one.

I agree that having only a chest freezer would be problematic if trying to store a variety of things. Trying to find things that are buried at the bottom, not really remembering what all is in there.

I will use my 15 cu/ft chest freezer for only the 500 lbs. of beef that I expect to get when we process the cows. A lot will be burger that I can put in milk crates. 90% lean in one, 80% in another, steaks in a 3rd, etc. This way I can just pull one of the crates on top to get to something in a bottom crate.

I will keep a month or 2 worth of everything in the upright so I will seldom have to open the chest freezer.

I inherited one from my mother (who bought it during the Y2K scare) and also appreciate having it, as I am also one who will stock up on items that are on sale at unusually good prices (like cheese and meats), freeze some of my own fresh and store bought produce, leftovers, and soups, and prepackaged frozen veggies from the grocery. I have even frozen milk in the past.

My primary caveat would be adding another draw on electic power. The whole world needs to use less if we hope to stop scorching Earth.

Lone Jack, what you are saying makes perfect since for a butchered beef. Leaning over a chest type freezer, hurts my ribs too much - I am short - and getting to the bottom is impossible. Just some things people have to take into consideration when contemplating the purchase of a freezer.

I'm short too and have visions of ending up head down in the freezer with my legs sticking up and I won't be able to get myself out of that position. then after a few weeks of not answering the phone or emails from my sister she'll send her dh or son over to check on me. and there I'll be frozen head down in the freezer.

I'd like to find an upright that's about 5 cf. my sister's upright is 13 cf (they also have a small chest type) and I know that is too big for me. somewhere around half that size would be good for me.

For those questioning it, I didn't use "cracker" in a derogatory sense. Here in rural Florida a lot of the locals whose families settled here back in the 1800's became cattle ranchers. They used whiplashes to help herd the cattle and the sound of the whips was a loud cracking sound. Hence the term "crackers". So a lot of the families living in this area are still in the cattle business or are directly related. Of course this term is also picked up and used in a derogatory sense for Southern rural people in general but that's not the case here.

@desertsteph: Absolutely agree. I checked and Home Depot still has 5 cf freezers. Did not think to check Lowe's.

Best buy and Sams also has small upright freezers. (OR did a Christmas time)

This is the one we bought in September 2018. It is great. It is not small, but you would be amazed at how much you will store in it. It does something to seal after you open the door. It also nags you if the door is left open. The garage ready is the key. Our other died, because it shouldn't have been in the garage.
