How do you isolate new plants in a small space?
Comments (4)Not really a problem, exactly. It's just that I got some new plants, and I feel I ought to isolate them, but it's hard to decide where and how. I've been known to just add them to the shelves anyway, but mainly on the left set of shelves, which houses my succulent collection, because quite frankly, they're easier to replace than my AV and orchid collection. Right now, my newbies are on my desk, getting in my way. The only plants on my desk are a bunch of AV babies which are encased in plastic baggies, so they're safe. I considered that option, but unless I know a plant likes that much humidity and nonmoving air, I try not to put it in a bag, to avoid rotting. I did give the newbies a cleaning, and a wipedown with neem, which hopefully should help with potential critters. I'm mainly worried about critters, really. Well, we'll see how it goes. At this rate, it may not matter shortly... I'm just about out of room for new additions anyway....See Morelawn boy 22260 self and 22261 self propelled
Comments (3)This guy just sells the 22260's - Got the same trimming 50-60 lawns a week bit on the phone. Im just a home landscaping fanatic and I just had to have one...... Well, I just a bought spankin' new NOS new one on ebay. I've tried a LOT of mowers. My feedback and review on the 22260 is it's a good mower- but for the price?? please. And yeah, it might outlast some 4 strokes with more odd 2 stoke problems but who cares? The 4 stroke is easier to use, not (that) much heavier, unless you cant bench press 100 pounds it shouldnt be an issue. Frankly, I think its all hype on a mower simply because you cant get them. Mine was shipped with one bent wheel, and the rears had flat spots from sitting so long. So, if you want a 1500.00 mower that looks like a 99.00 special with a really cool gas tank, grab one. It will last.... just don't think god himself with bless your lawn for using such a wonderful unit. It just has a spinnning blade like the rest. I've come to realize mowers can be addictive- I now just focus on making actual money...See MorePure seed by isolating from pollinators?
Comments (3)I tried using isolation cages for bush beans, the same ones I use to get pure seed from peppers. Unfortunately, the conditions under which peppers thrive (heat & humidity) promote disease in beans... so I was forced to discontinue the experiment, to save the plants. I used floating row cover; a screen cage might allow greater air flow, and avoid the disease problems. For common beans, since they self-pollinate, all that is needed to produce pure seed is a little distance. The distance necessary is a topic of considerable disagreement; search GW for "bean cross", and you will find many discussions of the issue. In general, if you grow two beans on opposite sides of your yard, the seed should be reasonably pure - for your own use. Grow one in pots in your front yard as well! But if you are preserving an irreplaceable heirloom, I would use a greater distance, or grow only that bean for one season. My yard is just over an acre, and I grow three beans for seed each year at home, 100+ feet apart. In my main plot (on a friend's property) I grow several others in a 100-foot square; but I trellis other plants between them, and plant flowers throughout to act as "cleaning stations" for pollinators. So far, no crosses. But I can tell you that I grow many beans obtained through swaps, and I have yet to go a year without seeing crosses... so they do occur. Sometimes they are so bad that even after roguing out the plants with obvious differences (which is a good practice) the remaining seed is still impure, and canÂt be saved. I nearly lost a rare variety that was sent to me this year; only _one plant_ was true-to-type. It may take me several years to clean it up to the point where I can re-offer it to others. Limas & runner beans are more difficult than common beans. Bees are strongly attracted to the blossoms, so if you grow more than one, they _will_ cross... and that also includes any of your neighbors within at least 1/4 mile. I have never tried caging them; but it is my observation that while they are both supposedly self-fertile, they seldom self-pollinate without assistance from insects. You might be able to grow them under a cage, if you "trip" the flowers to simulate an insect visit....See MoreAre deal-breakers always deal-breakers?
Comments (15)there are things that are deal-breakers no matter what. but usually it depends... if your BF told you he smoked pot in 11th grade, then not a deal breaker. If he told you he raped a girl in 11th grade, then yes it is a deal breaker. If he's been to jail, depends what for. Worked as male escort or exotic dancer-stripper? not my cup of tea but maybe I could tolerate striper (if it was in his young years) but escort would be a deal-breaker. he revealed he is bisexual? i have nothing against bisexual men (as friends) but don't want bisexual man as a partner. so it would be a deal breaker but would not mind remaining friends. he told you he is gay and uses women to cover up...lol Oh i don't know. My point is it depends. gave children for adoption? not the type of guy I want but how old was he? 15? parents convinced him it is for the best and his children ended up in good hands? then maybe not a deal breaker. Killed in a fight in self-defence and served his sentence. Don't want killers, but soldiers kill in defence. Maybe not a deal breaker. Killed his girlfriend because she cheated. Deal Breaker. belonged to Communist party? not a deal breaker. Belong (now or in the past)to Nazi party? White supremacy? Deal breaker. believes in polygamy? Deal breaker (will try to bring 2nd wife lol). Did group sex or threesomes? Gross. If one time deal as an experiment not a deal breaker. Regular passtime: deal breaker. what else? robbed old ladies? hahah Did I try everything? It all depends. Give us a hint how bad is his sharing? PS OHHHH ONE MORE!!! He WAS A WOMAN IN THE PAST! I don't know about that one.......See MoreMichael
