Crown molding at cabinets, reduced height in one area

I am installing crown molding on some new kitchen cabinets. It looks great so far in most areas (first photo with crown installed), but there is one area above the refrigerator cabinet (second photo without crown installed) where the height available gets very restricted due to uneven floors and ceiling in that area.

Installing the cabinets in this area was a huge pain and removing them for modifications is not feasible

Current plan is shave off the top of the crown before installing in this area, but I may have to take off as much as 3/4in at the worst point.

Am I missing anything? Is there a better solution that may not be as noticeable?

All base cabinets should be installed to a level line at 34.5” above the high spot of the finished floor. The bottom alignment height of all wall cabinets should be at 54” above the high spot of the floor.

The height of the wall cabinets should take into consideration any fall in the ceiling, and be designed for the shortest distance between the 54” AFF line and ceiling height, rather than the tallest difference.

You’ve designed for the tallest difference, and the molding is too tall for the shortest distance. You need a shorter crown. Then you use starter filler strips, scribed to the ceiling slope. Apply the shorter molding. Done. Cutting down moldings never works, or looks good.

Like said above. Refer cabinet too tall. We usually try for 3/4" between the bottom of the crown and the start of the profile on the sub crown to absorb the variances in ceiling height.

here is the pics of how it's set-up today. breakfast nook today--one upper cherry cabinet w/crown will go to the right. do we extend the cherry crown all the way across the ceiling above the sink , to the upper cabinets to the far left? see pic of our OLD kitchen,which butts up right next to breakfast nook should we install the cherry crown above the door, thinking this might look too heavy though? here is the floor plan

Thank you! I twent to look and measure again today and think the problem is that on half the kitchen the starter strip would be 1 to 1.5" but on the other half, there is no need or room for a strip--in otherword the crown moulding would go straight from the top of the cabinet so there would be no space between the cabinet door and the moulding, unlike the other half of the kitchen. I'm wondering if that will look weird--eg, perhaps it would be better for us to get a smaller crown moulding (say under 3") and then all the cabinets would have some sort of starter strip, but it would vary between 1 and 3". Of course, that means the 'finished' kitchen gets pushed off again, but maybe I can find crown moulding locally and paint to match rather than order from the cabinet company. Thoughts?

Thanks annettacm, for your response. Yes, it would keep the dust from accumulating. I came across your before and after pictures last night, and your floor plan looks very similar to mine. I love how you opened up the dining room and incorporate all the space. Hmmmm (I can't go there - I told my DH I would not move any walls!) Back to my crown molding questions. I want to be sure that the different heights look in proportion, so I think I just need to be careful that the trim extension/filler on the 48" doesn't get too big/tall (the KD is telling me 2-3"). Does anyone think the heights look out of proportion if 48" cabs have that 2-3" filler trim piece and the 42" cabs don't? It adds expense and I'd rather save some dollars there if it would look fine and in proporation without. Thanks everyone!

Our ceilings are also off. Or KD designed a 3-piece crown molding that handles it so well that you can't tell w/o getting on a chair and measuring! The center piece, "stock", is what is used to adjust for ceiling height. The "crown" (top) & "soffit" (bottom) pieces are the same height regardless of the ceiling height. You could also do it w/two pieces if you eliminate the soffit piece and just use the stock & crown. The stock would be attached to the piece of wood Ccoombs1 described and the stock piece would be measured to fit the space...then the top piece is put up. (Think of the stock as "filler"!) HTH!
