Hosta Worst of 2018
Comments (35)I miss my Little Treasure and I REALLY miss Sparkler. Sparkler was just so adorable. I notice that no one offers it for sale any more, so I know it wasn't me--it must have been a dud for lots of folks. This year, after a single leaf came up last year, High Society finally called it quits I guess and gave up the ghost. No trace of it. And, I only got 1 season of Dinky Donna and my 2nd Silver Threads & Golden Needles. Hard to think that an unglazed terracotta long skinny rectangular planter had insufficient drainage holes on the bottom. They didn't seem small to me. I am consoled in my new-from-last-year Faithful Heart is really beautiful this year, as is its companion from the shipment last year, Dinner Mint. I spent about 3 hours today and 3 hours yesterday potting up hostas and heuchies to make them portable for the move out of NYC I hope to make. I think I am keeping Opulent Grow Pots in business, ordered so many of them. I hope the "landscape workers" do not spray weedkiller right adjacent to my garden this year, as most everybody is looking so beautiful. I wrote a very nasty email to the co-op manager about their stupidity, trampling stuff, losing stuff, killing stuff and he forwarded it to the landscape company....See MoreHosta A 2019 ......

Comments (59)I don't know if my Royal Tiara is slug prone. Wasn't last year, and up here on the balcony, I don't see how slugs will get to it. I treated all my hosts with vinegar before I moved, to try and exterminate any slug eggs. But the minute I put it into the ground in my garden last year, it was absolutely ENCHANTING. I don't know why some of them just grab us like that, but they do. Thanks to Chris at Hallson for finding me this great specimen when the webpage officially said "sold out". He dug around and found it for me. Now what are we all gonna do without Hallsons around, and who can we call about problems? :(...See MoreHosta Noids 2019
Comments (60)@steve duggins(Z6a) - Central Ohio, I think of some gardeners as plant collectors. They purchase a plant because its individual characteristics please them. Their gardens are often filled with one-each plants, and if they are hosta lovers, they sometimes have things labelled so when walking by visitors can read the name of each cultivar. Although I love hostas for their variety, and sometimes I've bought one for its uniqueness, I've more frequently acquired hostas because they fulfill a need for a particular spot in my garden. For instance, if I need a large yellow hosta, I research large yellow hostas, and then buy enough of them to do the job in that spot in the garden. If I want something short and white for the front of an area, I do my research and get enough of that variety to do the job. This has worked well over time for me. For that reason, I don't have 400 varieties. I do have 400 hostas, though. Yes, I have succombed to temptation and bought a hosta just because I love the plant. This necessitates finding a spot to plant it, and given how full my entire garden is now I no longer have the luxury of emptiness waiting to be filled. I'm more in maintenance mode, and fine-tuning mode. Oh, and musical chairs mode. So I don't think of myself as a collector, but a designer -- one who has a shade garden and who loves hostas. I have used more "wave spacing" and "massed plantings" to design my garden than "specimen" plantings....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
