I hate my fridge placement (small kitchen)
Comments (5)I'd probably think about an L plan and skip peninsula or island or anything in the middle of the floor...the long wall of the L can extend to fairly close to the patio door and in the eating area at that end I'd look for just the right drop leaf pedestal table so the traffic to the patio door can be accomodated. The fridge can go between the two windows once the bulkhead and peninsula is out. Invest in the liebherr fridge and furniture grade cabinets because it will be very open. The fridge could go where the stove and vent is, and place stove with hood on wall area between two windows-I don't think that change would be costly because it's an outside wall and easy to vent straight. A few more details would help-what is the sq footage of the home overall, what is your budget, how many feet across the room. and how long is the outside wall with windows?...See MoreWhat do you think of fridge placement?
Comments (10)We're empty-nesters and flocks of people trying to get to the cokes aren't a big concern. I wouldn't do it that way anyway, though, even though the fridge is really nicely convenient to the prep surface, because of what it does to the rest of the kitchen. Two corners are a U's weak points, with unused counter space and hard-to-access storage, and the linking counter is a strong point, but having the fridge right there accentuates the 2 negatives and eliminates the positive. Your diagram doesn't indicate where your windows are, but if you were to keep this setup, how about shifting the stove toward the dining room a bit? That's because I'm a left-of-stove worker, and with the fridge's bulk looming there, its door swing requirements, and the corner space unappealing, I suspect I would tend to work scrunched up close to the stove. That'd be a shame because having the fridge open right to the work counter with the stove on the other side is a very nice feature--I'd just want more functional and visual elbow room for my main work space....See MoreFridge-Stove-Sink or Fridge-Sink-Stove?
Comments (15)This is actually a very good layout! Kitchen workflow: refrigerator --> prep sink --> prepping --> range --> table (or cleanup sink) The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep and Cooking Zones, the Cooking Zone is protected from traffic, there's no zone-crossing while prepping/cooking, and there appears to be ample workspace for each work zone. One question - what is that block to the right of the island? If that's a wall or something else, then you don't have enough aisle space b/w the island and that wall. You don't need two trash pullouts. Set up your island as follows (top-to-bottom or left-to-right): 18" trash pullout + 18" sink + whatever space you have left over for cabinets (hopefully, at least 36") This places the trash pullout in the Prep Zone (where it's used most), near to the Cooking Zone (where it's used 2nd most), and near the Cleanup Zone (where it's used least of the three primary work zones). If you have the room on the island, then opt for a 21" or 24" sink base for your prep sink. The interior dimensions of a sink are usually 1" to 3" narrower than the sink base cabinet. We have a prep sink that's 17-3/4" square and I use it all the time! It's a good size for just about anything. Is it big enough for all tasks, no, but that's when I use the cleanup sink - it's rare that I use the cleanup sink for prepping, though. If the island is supposed to have seating, then be sure it's at least 41.5" deep to accommodate: 1.5" counter overhang + 24" deep cabinets + 1" decorative door/end panel + 15" clear knee/leg space for the seating overhang....See MoreWindow placement for flanking stove hood
Comments (47)smm - it's like you have ESP! The last 24 hours have been all about cabinets (even more than usual). At the risk of getting eggs thrown at me, I'm considering changing course on cabinets. I've been researching Cliq Studios cabinet company, and started talking to them today. I wore my contractor down, told him it's basically the same thing as his preferred cabinet supplier, but I like Cliq's options more. Although I'm sure Sophie et al. would say if it's Chinese they're all the same, I feel a lot more comfortable ordering from them (they have 50,000 facebook reviews, mostly glowing, 5-star rating with Better business bureau), and I think this is a step above other ready-to-assemble cabinets I've looked into. They're having a 40% off sale right now (I know that sounds so cheesy..."act now to get 40% off"). I'm impressed that Blum motion glides and soft close hardware come standard, they use I beams to strengthen the boxes, they're carb 2 compliant, it's comes pre-assembled with free shipping and...did I mention they're having a 40% off sale right now? We've got a pretty tight budget and can only change cabinet suppliers if the cost is comparable, which, based on the rough estimate I got last night on their website, I think it'll be. So, long explanation to say that I'm leaning toward an off-white color called "Painted Linen"....See MoreUser
