Climbing Crimson Glory
Comments (22)Thanks for all of your nice comments. I just wanted to comment on Ingrid's, re disliking red roses, but liking this one because it tends towards the purple side - that is exactly how I feel! I only took a cutting of the original of this because I also like climbers very much (solves my deer problem). I know that rose hybridizers spent decades trying to develop red roses that did NOT fade towards purple, but I don't like those kind nearly as well - boring. This one goes great with the purple clematis (which was a total accident - I had planted the clematis years before, and forgot about it, because it didn't bloom, until it suddenly burst into bloom on the arch one Spring) because of its color. It wasn't until it rooted that I realized what a marvelous fragrance it has - really strong "old rose". To answer Nancylee's question, I never cut that clematis back (I am lazy, and therefore cannot be bothered to remember which clematis is a I, or a II, or a III, or what the different pruning instructions are for those different types - I just let them grow without pruning) at all until last Fall, when we had to seriously prune the Sombreuil, as it was lopsided, and was threatening to bring down the entire large arch, and/or snag/injure passersby. So, I pruned the clematis down to about 2 feet, not realizing that clematis, like roses, have growth nodules along the stems...Anyway, it showed no signs of life early this Spring, so I decided I had killed it. To my joy it eventually re-emerged from its roots, and by now has achieved about 5 feet in height, and climbing still - I have managed to direct it so that it will climb up the arch again to join the Sombreuil and the CG. Here is a pic of a bloom of my CG which was taken before we knew who it was. Jackie...See MoreBest Red Climber - Orfeo or Crimson Glory
Comments (3)I have both and each one has a set of problems. Orfeo is a fabulous rose, great scent, produces well for me in the spring, sporadic blooms there after. It is huge, I mean huge. It was somewhat well mannered the first year, started shooting out canes the 2nd year, the third year I got blooms (finally, but worth the wait). I prune it back after each flowering. It is not the type of climber that will fit on a pillar or mannerly lattice and it is prickly. I love it, but don't think it is right for a townhome. Cl. Crimson Glory can be a difficult, fussy rose. It has the loveliest of scents and blooms, but it is not consistant, at least not yet. And it grows very slowly. Mine is subject to rust and PM in my Bay ARea zone. I know that LoriElf grows Cl Etoile d'Hollande in MD and it does well for her. I can't speak to black spot, as it is not a huge problem for me. Etoile has a deep damask fragrance, is dark red and the older it gets the better it produces. The other old standby is Don Juan. The one problem with DJ, is that sometimes you can get a clone that has canes that do not produce fragrant blooms. Carol...See MoreIs Etoile de Hollande red or crimson?
Comments (10)Thank you all for your responses, sounds very good! Hi Carla, Dublin Bay is stunning and I read your previous post recommending it. Perhaps a touch brighter red than I am looking for, so I hope Etoile will turn out to be slightly darker. Thanks for your comments! Melissa, thank you! Just what I was hoping to hear! It's funny you should mention Mr. Lincoln because he is partly responsible for this idea ... I just noticed how well ML and George Dickson contrast with some of the paler roses and I wanted the same look in front of a dull hedge of Leyland cypress. I'm hoping for good rebloom as this is a prime location and there are 3 once-bloomers there already. BTW, did you ever find your glasses? Hello Taoseeker and thanks! I am indeed very interested in your first-hand experience with EdH. I will make sure to feed and water well. Rust was new to me, we got it for the first time this year on MIP. We did have an unusually wet spring though. Nice report-card on a young rose, Seattlesuze! And great to hear that your Etoile and MAC look good together. Here those two would be separated by Bobbie James, but once he's finished blooming, they would be close neighbours. Rosefolly, blending is exactly what this rose would have to do and I'm glad to hear that you think she's suitable for that. I have a credit note from a mail order nursery and my choices are somewhat limited! Thanks again, everyone! MayBee...See MoreLooking for red climber
Comments (52)Dianela, you mentioned Reine des Violettes. My climate is fairly similar to yours; I'm in hot humid southeast Virginia. In our garden Reine blackspotted terribly. She was also very stingy with the blooms -- though perhaps it was just an underperforming specimen -- and her color was never anything I would call violet. It was more fuschia. I had high hopes for that rose and she never lived up....See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
