Tray ceiling in Blue? Would Appreciate Advice
I’d like to paint the upper ceiling of the tray a light blue but am worried that I will pull too much blue out of the wall colour- not looking for blue walls. I’ll be using BM Paper White on walls, BM Chantilly Lace on Fireplace, flanking bookcases, trim. White oak flooring, white wall of kitchen cabinets and 9’ blue island ( Cabico Blue Fir) Windows are south-west facing. Do you think I can get away with a blue tray ceiling?? Thanks kindly for any advice.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agowhat kind of blue? dark, light, metallic, baby, gray blue, ??? Chantilly is a cooler white that can lean a little minty looking. keep that in mind. (why are you using two diff whites so close together?) Maybe you'd like to sample Oxford White or even Simply White?

I love a deep navy, but you'd have to something blue below it to tie in the color. like they did here w/the drapes. it's beautiful together
and while the trim work/cabinet is a bright white, the actual wall color is more of an ivory. looks great w/the blue and the dark floor.

have you thought about going darker? maybe a dark navy or even charcoal?Kendall Charcoal and soft white walls.

Comments (3)First of all, I am so sorry you have had these ongoing problems. I believe you may have several factors all interacting to cause the situation. Here is some background info for your general knowledge. Your home's system was likely designed for the a sample home in your subdivision. With a particular floor plan, number of windows, room sizes, and facing a certain direction (north, east, etc.) Then as options are added like a vaulted ceilings (which increase the cubic feet of air that must be conditioned, possibly changes positions of ductwork, and may also mean that the attic insulation changed from the sample home) it may be that the heating and cooling system was not re-calculated for these changes. Even if you have more windows facing east or west vs. north and south can make a difference in the cooling load of a home. Skylights, insulation, what type of glass all make a difference. This is a pretty common problem. So what I am saying, is that unless you have another home in your subdivision by the same builder, with the same floor plan and options AND facing the same direction, then you may not have any examples to compare to your home. IF you can find such a house, I suggest finding out if they have had problems like yours, and what they have done to solve them. So, how to fix your house. I recommend calling 1 or 2 heating and cooling distributors in your area, and asking them to recommend a dealer to use to do a load calculation and ductwork analysis on your home. Or call 3-5 residential heating and cooling dealers in your town and ask the same thing. Say that you are not in a big hurry, and that you want to work with the person there that has the best experience and expertise. I suspect that you may find that your ductwork is too small in size. I also suspect you may find that the size of your system is too small as well. If this is the case, there are different options on how to best fix this problem. But I cannot stress this enough--in our ductwork training we learn that "you cannot power your way out of too-small ductwork" Think of air like a liquid. If you need to move more air, you need to address the ductwork capacity. If it is too restrictive, it can't fit any more air in it to move through it. Also, is your too-warm space next to the garage or basement that is not being conditioned? This may also be a factor when comparing your home to others in your neighborhood. Comments (45)Chellamaral, there was tile EVERYWHERE in this house and it only bled through in one area - a back bathroom. I think the grout was white, but I believe it was white all over the house . The tile that bled was the only original tile from 1958 left, so maybe that had something to do with it. To be honest, it didnt look that bad. One contractor was kind enough to tell me that if he stained the existing concrete, I would have ghosting every where. The current contractors said the same thing, hence the overlay. My friend just used the same contractor, and their existing floor was good enough to stain w/no overlay. I will ask the flooring guy why some floors are good tomorrow. I didnt get any pics of the bathroom, but here is an example I found online: Pip is doing well. He is a male parakeet. I already have two small (potty trained!) parrots, and wasnt looking for any more birds, but little Pip needs someone. His wings are cut (badly) and his nails are VERY long, but he seems tame. I have scoured the internet and no one has posted a lost ad in that area. My friend says that there are lots of foreclosures where she found him, and she thinks someone just let him go. How could someone let a bird that cant fly "loose?" It is bound to be eaten by a cat. I will probably get him a girlfriend and a bigger cage, once I move into the new house. There will actually be a bird room for my two birds. I love my birds, but had I known how much time/attn. they require, I would have thought twice before buying them. Below is my Rocky (post bath) and Zeek. I had an AC contractor look at the ducts. He said I have a HUGE underground duct with branches to the rooms, and moving the current ducts would be fine. The ducts are moved now and they have laid the first coats of overlay. Unfortunately, the scoring is still showing through and looks terrible! They are laying another coat tomorrow, but I am not confident it will disappear. I am not sure I am willing to pay 1k for the scoring, since the last one was wavy. Comments (20)I don't love the revere pewter. But I really think it will be a few years before I get around to changing it. Mostly because this house needs sooooo much both big and small (kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, haven't even found a desk for dh's "office" space yet, ds wants a different bed for his birthday, etc, etc.) and because I don't hate the color and it works well with the adjacent rooms, curtains and so on. So I was more or less thinking this would be a chance to play around with the tray ceiling without much commitment. I have never had one before so I don't have any experience to draw on for how to treat it. Since that part had to be painted anyway--at least touched up--I figured it might be an opportunity to try something out. Then if I don't love the effect, I can change it when I repaint the whole dining room. Creamy. Hmm. Comments (2)I think because we were looking at matte finish, slightly textured finish... and the price for high quality wallpaper didn't seem to have the value when compared to paint... If we did wallpaper it wouldn't be a large pattern or anything, it would be something very textured but subtle. Any suggestions?...See More- PRO

I think a soft gray blue, or even one of the darker gray/blues would be a great choice. (Hale Navy is a good one if going dark)

4 years agoSeems to me that the tradition of light blue ceilings is usually a feature in a very traditional home. This home looks contemporary to me.

4 years agoI would definitely do a different color ceiling - it's the 5th wall of the room. To some it may feel more traditional and to others it can feel more contemporary just by how the room is staged more so than the painted ceiling IMO. Here's some more pics:
I do not have 1 white ceiling in my house and I love it!
Good luck - it's only paint, so it can be changed if you get tired of it
