Does moss from my trees need to be removed from My flower beds?
Comments (2)More than likely what comes off that tree is Lichens and not moss, although both are first stage plants Ma Nature grows to add organic matter to soil so higher order plants can grow in that soil. Lichens grow on trees where dust from the air accumulates in the bark and traps just enough moisture for those plants to grow. What is knocked off by the birds can be left where it falls, mixed into the soil, or picked up and composted....See MoreHow much soil do i need to remove from around my tree?
Comments (2)Dig down, carefully, next to the trunk until you find the flare, where the trunk and the roots divide, and the trunk thickens outward. That should be at ground level. Using that as your guide, start removing the dirt. You don't have to remove ALL the dirt over the roots, but try to leave no more than 2". If the tree's roots have already started growing up into the new dirt, carefully remove it - they won't be much problem. If they are heavily into the dirt you are removing, then leave it. You may end up with a lawn that is slightly uneven - if you really can't stand that, then apply a light mulch to the area between the "hilly" part and the trunk - no mulch in the 2-4" next to the trunk, and no more than 4" of new stuff (dirt and mulch) over the tree roots. Mulching anyway, as above, and as wide as possible, is a good idea. Good luck....See MoreLeaves on Mulch Bed?
Comments (15)My beds are planted along paths. I strive to mimic what I have seen in nature out on hikes & some plants are native while others are cultivars of natives. Leaf mold mixed with shredded leaves makes outstanding mulch & looks neat but not necessary tidy. It lends a natural look. In any case no leaf is wasted if I can help it. I also find using leaves in the garden makes my yard the bird hot spot. They comb through the plants & pick off pests & kick the mulch around as they forage. They need all the help they can get in this day & age so I'm happy they accept what I have inadverantly offered. & anyway, everything justs melts into the ground in a few months....See MoreLeaves on Flowerbeds - do I remove them?
Comments (2)I would leave the leaves in place to act as mulch and decompose to add nutrients to the bed, unless you are talking about a thick layer. With a thin layer of leaves, the only possible downfalls would be aesthetics (if you didn't like the looks of the leaves) or disease (sometimes mulch can provide a place for fungal disease to reside), but, unless you are aware of a disease issue in your beds, the benefits should outweigh the negatives. If you added lots of leaves, they could form a barrier to proper drainage and aeration, and provide an even higher potential for disease retention. If lots of leaves are present, you might consider removing some of them. You don't want a thick, solid, impermeable mat of leaves. Finally, if you have woody plants in your beds, make sure the leaves are raked away from the base of those plants so as not to touch the bark. Leaves, or other types of mulch, should not be placed up against bark....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
