Need some ideas to get me started - new here.
Comments (10)WOW! And here I thought that no one replied... turns out I just never got any emails about the replies. Anyways, thanks to everyone who did reply for all the hints and tips. In the time that has passed I have walked with my landlord over the whole property and he's all for what I plan on doing here as he's been unlucky with his tenants to date not wanting to do any type of improving upon the aesthetics here. I can understand why the landlord hasn't put any type of money into the place as when we moved in last fall the whole back yard under all those nice shade trees was nothing but dirt. That's why the grass is so patchy back there. The tenant before us had 28 fox-hounds in a big caged in area under those trees... the area is almost completely filled in with grass that was seeded last fall, needs another seeding though. Now that I've had more of a chance to pay attention to just how much sun each area I plan to plant gets I now know better what to plant there. The back of the house gets quite a bit of sun actually, almost 6 full hours of afternoon sun whereas the front gets full morning sun. The place we chose for the veggie garden is in an area that gets sun from about 9am until dusk so it will have enough, plus it's close enough to the water hose! I've also identified some of the "bushes" that I didn't know when I originally posted this thread. There are two large groups of Common or American Elderberry (one that is crowding out my snowball bush) as well as some honeysuckle bushes, a large Mimosa tree that's just about to bloom and a straggly looking red Mulberry. It's difficult to tell at first whether some of the trees are Black Walnut or Tree of heaven but I figured it out as the BW has it's fruits developing. There are still two unidentified bushes but I'll figure it all out. Now that I've bored y'all with my uninteresting story I guess I should end this by saying that I will probably be posting photos of the design I finally chose for this large property. From what I've figured so far, the investment will be no more than about 2-3000. We are planning on staying here for quite a while... don't plan on moving until hubby's ready to retire (15 more years) and the landlord knows that if we do move most of what I plant will be moving with me. Especially the bulbs and anything easily transported to the new place. So once again, thanks for all the replies. ttfn Mystic....See MoreIdyll 253 - Get Well Soon
Comments (105)Hi all. I need all your good thoughts. I don't know when I have hurt so bad. I have doubled my pain pills and hope I am not damaging something else. I know... I need to get a dr. appointment, but I keep thinking it will get better. Our temps have dipped into the teens again, with highs in the 20s and 30s. Snow is predicted for tonight, with a 10F temp. Marie, we were under 3 differant weather warnings yesterday, but none of it materialized. Sorry about what you are getting. That type of weather is predicted for the area in southern Arkansas, ( where our son lives), for the next 3 days. I hope you noticed my pic of the Amaryllis buds. It is opening today. It is my darkest colored one. Another is peeking up a flowerbud but the return of the cold weather has stopped it in it's tracks. I'm sure all who are going to Deanne's will have a memorable time. That's so nice that many of you can do that. Honey, I have been slack with my sympathy for your woes. I am so very sorry about your dear friend. I am sure it is very hard to cope with. I also am hoping your knee is feeling better today. Thank you so much for your kind words. My sympathies with everyone else who is down with a virus. I'll trade places with you... [....Naaa, I wouldn't wish this pain off on to my worse enemy!] Teresa, I am so glad Boo is back to his old self. I have 'enjoyed' the saga of horse apples. :-) Babs, congrats on your DH's accomplishment. Norma, It is predicted to get down to 10 tonight, so the little crocus may be toast. I just hope the daffodils that are full of buds survive it. I remember another year when many things were in bloom and a deep freeze hit. The daffodils that were in bloom were okay. The day before it came, I climbed up on a shed and took lots of pics, knowing most of it would be blackened the next day. Yesterday eve when we were under all the warnings and watches( yes even tornado watches) I filled my kerosine lamps with anticipation of a power outage. I may need then before the weekend is over. Comments (10)These suggestions are all "vibrant reds", not just shadings of red: - Monarda 'Jacob Cline' (one of my all-time favorites!) - Here's a second vote for Lobelia cardinalis, with several varieties to chose from, including one with green/gold leaves ('Golden Touch') - Phlox paniculata 'Starfire' - Persicaria amplexicaulis (Firetail). . .a real knock-out and seldom seen! - Dianthus barbatus 'Heart Attack' (Sweet William) - Lychnis chalcedonica (Maltese Cross) - Lychnis coronaria 'Gardener's World' - Aquilegia 'Ruby Port' (Columbine) - Primula 'Miller's Crimson' Then, when you include "shades" of red, there's Knautia macedonica, a dozen or so varieities of Hemerocallis (daylilies), certain hollyhocks, Centranthus ruber, several Chrysanthemums, a few peonies, dozens of shrubs with red flowers and/or red berries (plus all the "red twig" dogwoods!). . . And how could I have forgotten the REDDEST of all: Oriental poppies! Finally, you CAN have red salvia - but in your Zone 5, it will of necessity be a tender perennial (replace it each year like an annual). . .check out the link below and you'll see what I mean. A little tip: Salvia elegans (Pineapple Sage) is readily available almost anywhere, and is almost always located in the herb section, not with the perennials. . .
