I highly recommend LED bulbs; we have about 100 3.6W MR16-style LED bulbs in our house in 3" mini-can housings, all at about 4500K (neither warm nor cool white). Each gives about as much light as a 35-40W halogen bulb. Our 19 x 21' kitchen has 15 for general lighting, plus the following task lighting: 4 over our 13' counter with main sink; 8 over our 5 x 9' main island; and 4 over our 3'3" x 9' small island. The 72" wide range hood came with ten 40W PAR20 bulbs but light a 9' wide area including range and landings; we'll be replacing the 40W bulbs with 5W dimmable LED bulbs. This is a good amount of light, not too much, not too little. Well, in the range hood area 50W of LED bulbs (equivalent to about 500W of halogen lights) is actually too much light but it's dimmable, not that my wife will use any setting but MAX. (There are also 10W LED bulbs available, but my wife has no self control when it comes to light and WILL burn out her retinas if I let her.) The standard medium base "Edison" bulb is not a form factor well suited to LEDs because while filaments (tungsten, halogen) are point sources and radiate in all directions, LEDs are VERY directional and have limited dispersion (15-60 degrees). Most LED medium base bulbs have more LEDs pointing outward with very few pointing up, some nearly exclusively point upward (downward in a pendant application). The distribution and "point" of the individual LEDs will affect whether the ambience (outward glow) or the task function (downward lumens) will work. Most pendant shades do have an inner white lining to even out the light distribution, and that will improve your downward light output for task lighting. LED color is tricky as well, as many are very cool white and won't give you that warm glow you expect from the pendant shade. A warm white (3000-3500K) bulb will give you the best ambience, whereas a pure white (4000-4500K) will give you the best task lighting. Another caution: pendants spaced too far apart look odd, but too close looks worse. I would recommend a spacing of about every 2-3'. Also, there should be ideally 3, or 4 max. Slimmer/smaller ones can be spaced a little closer and you can have more of them and still look fine. There are metallic shades (if modern works for your kitchen) that will give you a lot more task lighting. One of the things that I will say about these lights is yes, they will cast shadows, and No, they should not be the primary light source That said, there is not a single ornamental fixture in my house that is the primary light source in any room in the entire house, particularly not in a kitchen or bathroom. The kitchen and bathrooms are (or will be in the case of the upcoming kitchen) primarily lit from the ceiling by recessed lighting and by task lighting at the counters. The ornamental ceiling lights I took out of the bedrooms in my parents' house had been turned on so infrequently that the original 45 year old bulbs (all six) were in two of the fixtures. Those rooms were lit primarily by lamps switched by the door. My assumption regarding these lights by the OP is that the kitchen would primarily be lit by recessed and task lighting and that the pendant lights would be be adding sparkle and some lighting and that the weird shadows they may cast would be obviated by the "real" lighting, recessed or close-to-ceiling and task lighting.

@wdccruise yes pendents are more typically over a peninsula or an island these days. But that doesn't mean they cant be used elsewhere. In the days before recessed lights became omnipresent, suspended lights , as well as flush and semi flush lights, were common in kitchens. They will of course be higher than they would be over an island. And yes the room is bare now . Actually it's pretty torn up....the fireplace has been removed, the doors at the end are gone to be restored and refinished and the floor is going to be redone. As i indicated in an earlier post, the plan is for a sort of farmhouse kitchen with touches of both modernity and vintage. And my question wasn't so much about which lights to choose as which size lights I needed. Obviously,, the style I'm choosing work with my plan for cabinets, floor, countertop, etc. At least, they do in my opinion. My dilemma is over the size. Many of those I've seen and like are under 10 inches in diameter and that just feels too dinky to be the main lights down the middle of the room. So I was asking advice about that aspect. But since you asked: Cabinets will be shaker style, painted a light beige or taupe. Along the left wall, there will be a narrow, tall pantry cabinet, refrigerator and washing machine (behind a cabinet door, under the countertop). Upper cabinets in that area will go to the ceiling. Then, under the sink, a farmhouse sink, followed by an integrated dishwasher and a 2 ft. cabinet of drawers. Above the dishwasher and drawers, there will be 3 heavy oak open shelves,, with black iron supports for everyday dish and glass storage. On the opposite wall, starting from the doorway, there will be a 2 ft base cabinet with a shelf for an undercounter microwave and a deep drawer for pot lid and other storage. 'Above it, I plan a wrought iron pot rack on the wall. Then a black and brass 36 inch Ilve Majestic range with hood. Then a 6 foot long stretch of base cabinets, with drawers and above them, another 3 heavy oak shelves for storage of my dozens of glass food storage jars, with various flours, rice, pasta, etc Floors will be a medium brown oak in a herringbone pattern. , Backsplash is the cementine style tile seen below....in a mix of patterns in shades of beige, taupe, grey,, brown and cream. Countertops not firmly decided yet, but I'm leaning toward grey/beige/white marble. Yes, i know they'll etch and stain. I honestly welcome it...I want this kitchen to look well used and well loved. (and i've had soapstone in the past and know I'm not bothered by imperfections).

We are currently looking at this pendant light (will get 2). But I have know idea if you can adjust the length of the rod. It says it is 12" but comes with 18" adjustable rods. So does that mean it can only be hung at those two heights? Here is a mock up of where we would like to hang them height wise so not to block the window much.
