I would purchase an 8x10 colorful rug to center by the fireplace. Then I’d move the chairs and couch closer together so the front feet touch the rug. We probably need a picture of the wall your tv is on to give further advice. I am not a pro at all, but I’m interested to hear what their suggestions are.

I also would go less formal with the curtains. Maybe white linen and a natural shade in place of the sheets you have in the center.

I agree about the curtains, they need replacing too!

Can you show us each wall of the 4 walls completely? We haven't seen all the room. Stand opposite each wall in the middle, and get the whole wall in the photo, corner to corner. Then measure the walls and the openings and add them to a picture like this. Where do the 2 openings go? Are you OK with blocking the door to the hallway/stairs? There is a lot of furniture in this room. Could you get rid of one chair?

You can also pull one chair to be closer to the couch and position the other in the corner where you currently have the shelves. Do you use the shelves a lot or is it just to display items? If you don’t use it, you could move it to a different room and place the chair there with a throw and pillow.

Bamboo shades with white linen curtains would look nice with your wall color.

You can place a throw and pillow on your couch and move it to the corner so it doesn’t block the flow of traffic. If you need more seating, you can pull it closer to the couch and other chair.

Your room looks small. Are you putting the TV over the fireplace to gain more floor space?

The coffee table is so far away from the furniture that I would guess you don't really use it. You could either bring it closer to the couch or just remove it from the room. I agree that the chairs should be brought further into the room. Have you ever swapped position of couch and chairs? Would there be enough space behind the couch to allow people to walk unobstructed from one opening in the room to the other? Just a few ideas to play around with.

I added more photos and stood in the middle of the walls so that you can see more of the room(partim!). We have 2 openings in the room, maybe that’s why it’s awkward. The bookshelves might be moved to another room, as someone suggested here, but what will I replace it with? I’ll try to post a pic of a lamp I found on houzz

I need a to scale floor plan do it on graph paper.Show all measurements clearly marked, all windows and door ways then you will get some help. Right now I don’t see why the configuration is all that odd. Can you post some pics of the new furniture , because what you have IMO is large bulky when you say you want the FP to be sleek. Also always good to give us an idea of how many seats you need on a daily basis.

Could the TV go to the right of the fireplace, with the sofa facing it? Traffic path behind the sofa to the dining room. Do you want to open the traffic path to the hallway? Could you live with just the sofa plus one chair?

Measurements of your room would be very helpful. Hard to know if things will fit in the places we are suggesting.

Hmm, I`m getting lots of comments regarding furniture size but i feel i couldn`t live without the extra seating, esp. when guests come over. I then feel like i should have invested in an L-shaped sofa! The TV is wired there on the left, so no, that can`t move for now. i will try and move the sofa and chairs to see if traffic flow can be opened up. A small thing, but you could improve the appearance of your bookcase by removing the decor items from the shelves and top, and pulling all the books forward so they line up with the front of the shelves.

Don't get an L shaped sofa. You have even less choice of furniture placement then. You have the right idea with where things are in the room, everything just needs a slight adjustment. First decide how you ultimately want the room to look after the slate fireplace. Your curtains and table cloth are not at all sleek and modern. Decide on colors. I would look for a rug first that your chairs and anything else you want to keep in the room will work with. Center the rug in the room with the fireplace and the windows. 5'x7' bare minimum 8'x10' preferred. You want about 1'-1.5' of flooring showing in front of the fireplace. Then pull the furniture to it so the front legs only are on it. That will center the couch with the window giving you more space on the wall side. You can hide the dog crate against the wall next to it so your dog is close but you don't have to be looking at it all the time. Pulling the chairs up to the rug will hopefully give you space to walk around the back of them instead of in front. Place a small table between them. Next get a new longer tv console that will fill the wall next to the fireplace (not on an angle). Get one tall enough to have the tv at your preferred height for viewing. I personally don't like mounting them on walls... it's so permanent. You will be able to see it from the dining room and maybe even kitchen then. Your bookcase is fine where it's at.

Just a few more comments. I like the colors of your walls. I would look for a different ceiling light. It seems more like something for a dining room and hangs too low for your living room. I don't really think you need a coffee table it looks out if place. Think about a console table to put behind the sofa or a desk. Moving the couch closer to the fireplace will give you extra space behind it.

I personally like the couch floated- even in front of the doorway to dining room. As long as you can walk around on one side. Then you can put a console table behind it for drinks, lamps, etc. And use blinds, with curtains to floor even if you have to move the rod down. (we aren't fooling anyone- the ceilings are what they are!)

Lola comments about furniture are not the same as number of seats. Large puffy furniture takes up visual space and makes the room feel smaller. This particular furniture does not say "plain and sleek". Your FP may not be to your liking but it isn't over sized for the room, you don't have a large/raised hearth or mantle

I was going to say what jck910 just said: size of furniture is different from number of seats. Both chairs below seat one person, but the first one takes up a lot more space (and even more so visually). It's 8 inches wider.

Well, shoot. I was gonna suggest maybe mounting the TV above the fireplace with one of those extendable/angled arm thingies, and flanking your fireplace with seating. Bummer. :-/ Sorry I couldn't be of any help. :-(

Unfortunately, I have seen lots of living rooms like this. A little bit on the small side with an unfortunate traffic pattern that interferes with any reasonable furniture layout.

I'll second the advice against getting a sectional. When you are already constrained with space and traffic patterns, you don't want a large monolithic piece of furniture that doesn't give you flexibility in laying out the space.

No sectional. You think you have furniture arrangement problems now? A sectional piece would be much worse.

Yes, your furniture is too large. You mentioned moving the bookcase out - YES. You need more space in which to arrange your seating.

I would put the two chairs on the window wall with the round table between them. Then float your couch in the center with walkway behind it. Either squared to the chairs and closer to the FP. Or maybe angled if you have the room.

Your coffee table and the round skirted table are hogging a lot of useful floorspace. Move them out of the room and see if it doesn't breathe a little better. A smaller scale 3-seat sofa and two chairs will open things up even more. No leather, no puffiness and no brown!

If you're going to be working on the fireplace, I'd mount the TV above it. Many on this forum do not like this, but in some rooms, it's a great solution. If the TV is above the fireplace, then center the sofa in front of the large window, and move one of the chairs to where the TV is now. The large skirted table looks too large for the room. You need a rug to warm up the space, new drapes, the bookcase should go elsewhere. When you replace the couch, get one in a fabric not leather.

Before you rip out your fireplace, I would try painting the mantel and side trim the same color as your room baseboard trim. It's not a bad fireplace, it's just a little disjointed looking. The lighter mantel may blend better with the rest of the fireplace elements and make it recede a bit.

You can place the tv flat on the wall, on the right side of the fireplace, and float the sofa in front of the fireplace/tv with a walkway behind it. Then place the two arm chairs with a small side table together in front of the windows.

The TV can go anywhere as for the furniture smaller scaled does not mean fewer seats. I am still waiting for the floor plan . BTW there are many smaller scaled lether furniture pieces and IMO a better choice in a well used space.
