This past Friday DD and I spent most of the day viewing the aptly named 'Orchid Extravaganza' at Longwood Gardens. If anyone is thinking about going I heartily recommend it. It's one thing to see orchids in pots but this is taking it to an entire new level. Orchids were everywhere - wrapped round huge stone columns, enormous hanging baskets, walls of vandas, cascading phalaenopsis, containers filled with unusual blooms, floating orbs of flowering mauve blossoms........(see how they're created in the following link)........

It was magical and we nearly missed it. There were serious tornado warnings all along the I-95 corridor from Wilmington into Chester County along the route that we were taking. We opted to have breakfast in Philly first and then leave after the warnings had cleared. It's possible the predicted rain and wind gusts (up to 60 mph) deterred others because there were not many people roaming the conservatory - which was lovely for us.

I thought of contacting Jojoco to see if she might be there that day but with the nasty weather forecast I wasn't sure if we'd be able to go as planned. DH even tried talking us out of going but we decided to chance it. We may return on one of the days that they sell orchids but we purchase some of the plants grown by the horticulture students during their sale.

I'll post some photos below.

Sorry the pictures aren't better, I had to use my old cell phone....
