My mom has worn makeup like most of us breathe (those lipsticks are a twentieth of what she had). Every moment of everyday it's worn. Her friends have fussed at us because she's not wearing real clothes, fixing her hair, etc. I figured it out today. She doesn't know what to do. She looked in the mirror and hated how she looked. Put the makeup in front of her and said, change it how you want. She said, what do I do? She totally didn't know what to do. I'd load the brush and say, put it on your cheeks/eyes/etc. She would. Then, try to go elsewhere, but then would be dissatisfied with the result. Eyeshadow on your cheeks looks like a bruise. She had NO IDEA how to do it. Like you and I breathe. No idea.

I do not know what to say, but your mother is beautiful. This must have been hard for you.

It's also national pizza day. From a favorite childhood place:

happy, inside and out. The kindest person you've ever known. It is hard because she loves looking pretty. Makeup, clothes, jewelery... she wore it all with glee. Those days are gone. She's existing now.

rob....If I only lived closer.....sorry your going through this. I like the saying....it's better to have lived....loved...had it all...than never to have experienced life. Your mom's beautiful! We're hung up on superficial things....makeup....clothes....jewelry.

It's hard to explain my revelation. It's like Marilyn not knowing how to care for animals, Annie not knowing how to use a camera.... my Mom's picture would've been in the dictionary under girlie-girl. She loved wearing pretty things, to the point of being "blingy", fixing her hair different ways (she permed and frosted her own hair). It was becoming obvious she's really changed to her friends and to us. Figuring out why is pretty heart breaking. Dementia is a mean monster. If that makes any sense

It is heartbreaking to watch a loved one go through something like this, and very thought provoking, if not downright scary, to consider our own mortality and what may become of us. Hugs to you and all who are going through this.

My Mom's father had dementia and lived to 99...after he passed away, she used to say that she lost her father years ago...the body she was caring for was not her father any more. Very difficult. Sending you thoughts of strength and courage and patience and comfort.

That's all I can say any more, I miss my mom. That shell of human being, for whom I'd do anything, have patience for decades, isn't my mom. I will care for her as though she is, but it's only a shell these days. Such a vacant or a terrified look, not the one of compassion she wore all her life.

I can't imagine what you are going through, but I am sorry you are.

Oh Rob, how heart-breaking. I don't know which is worse.......to lose a loved one over a long period of time, or very suddenly, e.g. a heart-attack, accident etc. It takes a strong person to do what you're doing, I know you are, but it's devastating, nonetheless. Life isn't fair, dammit.
