A lot of cars in the street
Comments (29)Around here, there's a lot of older houses that don't have garages. Or garages that are too small to hold modern mini-vans and SUVs. There are also houses that were built without driveways and later owners have had to fit them in where they can. At my dad's 1880 Victorian, the slope up from the street to the driveway is a carved granite slab. After decades of repaving the street, it's an awkward angle to drive into the driveway and the bottom of my car scrapes the granite every single time. I only park in his driveway on winter nights when on-street parking is banned. I tend to park my car on the street during the day, because I'm running errands and fetching kids from school and taking them to practice. The setup of my house and driveway is such that it is easier to park in the street. I put the car up at night, but during the day, the street is the best place for my car. Another reason some people park in the street is because their kids are playing in the driveway. They might have a basketball hoop on the garage, or if there are no sidewalks, the driveway may be the only safe place to roller skate or things like that....See MoreDo you have two cars? If so why?
Comments (90)Catching up here. I’m so glad Rocky is better! What a scare you had. Faron, good to see your new car, and also nice to hear others are out trying and buying new ones. Must be in the air. I have had a touch of new car fever myself. Mine usually starts with noticing new models in the road, on-line searches and research, and trying to decide what I want next. I don’t ‘need’ a new car, but am trying to resolve whether I want to get a small SUV or crossover and trade in my sedan. Hard to figure out since DH has a 4WD king cab Tacoma truck and a couple of utility trailers anyway. So we don’t really need it for hauling anything except that I can cram a lot more plants and stuff in the back of an SUV than in a trunk. Plus I think they are cool. My car is so comfy and quiet on the road, and I want to make sure I get similar in whatever I get next....See MoreAdding additional one car garage and front porch
Comments (19)If you incorporate the existing garage closest to the house as a porch, then, if you add your two car garage with its door(s) facing the same direction as the door of the house -- not the direction of the existing garage door(s) , you could also extend the right wall of that garage several feet in front of the existing garage and create a shelter/overhang over the existing garage doors that lead to the front porches -- the one created from the existing garage adjacent to the house that could be connected to the smaller portico at the front door of the house. Driving in, you'd not even see the remaining garage door behind the new 2-car garage. You could connect the two garages with a door. If you like the style of your home ... if you want to keep true to the original design of your home, contact an architect to design your porch and garage addition. Putting up just any porch roof or even a smaller portico roof might not turn out as well as it could....See Moreone car driveway with wall on one side and fence on the other side
Comments (46)If you have the space to push the garage back on the lot, I would do so unless you have another reason for the current location. In my case, we had quite a large useless space behind the garage so we built a garden shed addition to use the space. In that spot the dirt was full of rocks with some concrete motorcycle parking space and tree overhead with privacy fence on the north and east sides. My space had no sunlight so no practical use at all for the space. I wish the original builder would have moved my garage closer to the back of the lot. My other comment is make sure you have planned for adequate lighting. We have motion sensor lights on the garage, but the space between the house and fence is a dark tunnel. When I first got my current car, the window tinting was dark and I had to use the camera because I coudn't see anything in the side mirrors....See MoreManasi Shah
