Rouge Royale - anything similar?
Comments (14)I have 'Tess D'Ubervilles' growing next to 'Rouge Royale'. RR is doing all right in hot and humid Miami. They are in section of my garden where the companion plants have done well...a little too well. When I see a red rose peaking out in this overgrown area (which is all the time), I can't tell which rose it is until I take a closer look. I haven't really done much comparing of the two blooms though. Since you didn't state the specific problems that you are having with 'Rouge Royale', I can only mention my problem. RR is that a hybrid tea and grows like one--a bit sparsely. (An flower that looks like an old rose ought to be growing on an old rose shrub and not on a hybrid tea stick.) Mine is grafted, much of the plant is somewhat shaded, and I spray. These things could all make a difference. Tess (forget what "helpmefind" says) seems to be a much larger bush. Probably another Austin monster, but she's a gorgeous one. I suspect that a least one of the red austins would work for you. They prbably all will need to be sprayed to do well though. I have wanted to try 'The Squire.' I read that it does well in Florida. Which is a shame because it's a not easy to find since Austin has requested that his licensed growers not grow it....See Morerouge royale - escaped the shovel
Comments (8)Steve - I can't remember if it was Greenland Nurseries - outside of Sherwood Park, Alberta or if it was Holes Greenhouse in St. Alberta, Alberta. Well, if it can be said to be on steroids and bloomed well without disease, then, for sure I'm going to keep it!! It really is beautiful. Carol...See MoreRouge royal is amazing
Comments (14)You crack me up, Kristine. Now I fear growing a Rouge Kong Royale. Ann, My RR gets the same darkened edge when it's on the hot side--I figured it was some kind of burning, or perhaps drying out, from out desert air. The Prince does the same thing. Once fall set in this burnt edge look did disappear with the cooler temps. Still, I could have done without the crispy look. Another thing I noticed was that when I cut RR for a bouquet, the entire rose darkened some after a few hours in a vase. I actually liked the darker color better. Your Rouge Royale's blooms are stunning. Flowers, I'm glad to read that RR's repeat and blooming are so good. It was hard for me to tell exactly how well my rose was blooming because the @#$% deer wouldn't leave RR alone. A very tasty rose, I'm sure, blast it. Comments (39)@noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque) Yes it's very very dry here, except in winter when we get plenty of snow. I definitely had some beautiful blooms this year, and I know better than to compare my 2nd season roses with very mature ones, but still I don't nurture them nearly as much as a lot of other people on this forum seem to. I really love flowers and would love it if all my roses were cranking out huge amounts of blooms, but I'm also trying hard to keep the garden as self-sustaining as possible. I don't have livestock so I buy manure/compost, but all the other "food" the garden gets is just chopped up grass, pruning scraps, homemade compost, and shredded leaves. I hope that those things bring in all the worms to make worm castings for me right in the soil. I have a bale of alfalfa that we ended up with accidentally that I'll be spreading later on this year. But even though I can see it works well for people, I'm trying to avoid the temptation of buying food/supplements. I do get pangs of jealousy sometimes though when I see some of the photos on here....See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
