Entryway color advice, please!

I need your thoughts on color in
my entryway, here. Facing in this photo are the closet doors. To the right is my front door. I’m taking the photo from my living room, with those old-fashioned spindle-things on the right side of the pic. So... I am thinking of painting the closet doors grey and adding sleek modern pulls that are longer than the ones pictured here, in either gold or silver. I could match the closet door paint color to the grey in the arched niche, but I’m starting to go off that particular shade(and yes, it’s a sloppy paint job and the vase/flowers are a little small for the niche). So - thoughts on a . grey for those two areas, and do I have to also paint the inside of the front door? I feel like that could be overkill, but is it weird to paint the closet doors but not the inside of the front door? (The outside of the front door is red. I love it being red but don’t want to paint the inside red). Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi there! - You’ve got some nice things going on with the flooring, a niche, and a nice sidelight on the door.

If it were my front entry, I’d take a little different approach, honestly. I think the two focal points want to be the niche and the front door/sidelight. Everything else, including the closet doors, should read as background and not distract from your focal points. I would be looking to paint the front door, its trim, and the sidelight in a contrasting color that’s picked up in the niche.

I don’t know if this could work with adjoining rooms, but I’d be tempted to reverse what you have. Put a medium shade of gray on the walls and closet doors (including the trim), and paint the niche and the front door (along with their trim) a fresh white.

Just some options to consider!

Roominess, I love your idea. It would be a lot more dramatic. My only concern - my console table has a grey horizontal strip of wood surrounded by glass and it sort of relies on the background being white paint in order to pop. I don’t want to get a new entry table. Thoughts...?

My first reaction is that there is too much contrast in the photo above. I am seeing the parts of your house instead of the whole.Your roof gives enough contrast to create a sharp, eyecatching appearance. I would go with much lighter colors for the shutters, and certainly a lighter color above your windows. The door could be a darker tone. I would paint the garage door the same color as the house, not the trim. Is a rich wood stain possible for the new door?

Thanks everyone! I had been trying to find a low-maintenance door (at the suggestion of pretty much everyone), but I think real wood is the only way to get what we really want. Which makes me happy, because I think that's what I really wanted all along :-) Stained it is. aktillery- Thanks! We went with mostly Integrity windows with a few Marvins worked in where sizing made it necessary. We went with the ebony which is technically black, but it's not a jet black. My dad thought they were bronze when he saw them in the sunshine.

When you look at the front in real life, does the window to the left of the door, look aqua as it does to me on this site? Are those colored blinds? If yes and yes, I would either get a new white window treatment, which would allow you to pick almost any color for the door, or paint the door a color that blends with the aqua window look.

You’re correct, but I think you might be pleasantly surprised! Have a look at your black and white photo in your niche. The darkest parts of that look to be about the same depth as your table color. But they still have a decent contrast with the paint. I think you’ll have plenty of color range available that can create enough contrast with the table and pop your focal points. Glad you like the idea!

The black and white print is popping because of the white mat, but you’re right, the table may tone and contrast nicely with a grey paint if I get the paint color right.
