How often do you clean your home?
Comments (13)I'm just a SAH... he, he. I don't have kids, I have 2 dogs & I think they may be worse! I do work part time, but mainly on Saturdays & sometimes throughout the week. My DH works construction out of state & is only home 5 days out of 15. I have a schedule made up... I feel like I need this to keep me motivated. I tried FlyLady, but that program didn't fit my/our life. I made my first schedule up & have since revamped it, I found it didn't work for me either. My new one is working out great, except for the days my DH is home, I try to do what I can, but I feel spending time w/ him is more important than a tidy house. With my old schedule, I would vacuum all carpets one day, sweep all hard floors one day, etc... I found that this didn't have the outcome I was expecting... I would look around the kitchen & the floor would be sparkling, but the counters were cluttered, the table needed to be wiped off, etc... So, with my new schedule, I do one room, plus other tasks, like laundry, Mon-Thur & various, less used rooms once a month on Fridays, I also run the dishwasher on Fridays. Weekends are for miscellaneous stuff that needs done & trash taken out. I've found this schedule has each room entirely clean all at once & I don't get sidetracked by little stuff, I save the Misc. stuff for the Misc. days. This has been working well for me, I have been 95% on schedule, if I don't get something done I force myself to get that thing & tomorrow's thing(s) done tomorrow! :)...See Moredo you keep your windows clean?
Comments (27)RE: windex foam cleaner that's attached to a garden hose- we live in a rural area and the outside faucets have hard water and I tried that and it was a disaster. RE: Windex outdoor cleaning pad - I made a modified version that worked for me. I took a bucket of vinegar water and an microfiber cloth put it on a swifter broom mop. It worked great. I rinsed the cloth after each window. Not perfect, but for a quick clean up it worked rather well. I hate to wash windows so it only gets done once or maybe twice a year. It looks so much better when done tho. When the wind picks up the dust during in a rain shower on our windy rural hill it makes for a mess....See MoreHow do you keep your home orderly?
Comments (32)I'm 'anal' about organizing...to the point where I labled the thread in my sewing box so I could find the color I wanted by looking at the top of the spool! My laundry routine is one I've used forever-and I never had to worry about never being able to keep up. My SIL has MOUNTAINS in her laundry room-she hasn't seen the floor in 10 years, I kid you not. Everyone had their own hamper and basket. Every couple days dirty laundry is brought to the LR where I have 6 hampers-one each for whites, towels, sheets/blankets, jeans and grubby work clothes, and two for colored clothes-light & dark. Clothes from the baskets get sorted into the hampers and then anyone can do a load. The routine goes like this-start a load when I get home from work. While dinner is cooking, I can fold up the load that is in the dryer. As the items are folded, they're put into the empty baskets left in the LR. Towels & sheets have their own basket. I also have one big hamper that all the socks go into...I HATE folding socks, so everyone would pick thru the basket for socks, or every once in a while, someone would fold socks while watching TV. Everyone would then be responsible for putting away their basket of clothes so the cycle could begin again. Every night before bed, the washer would be emptied into the dryer and started before bed. If you don't over load the dryer, you won't get wrinkled clothes. This cycle repeats daily. On weekends, I can catch up with towels & sheets. Every night before bed I load the dishwasher and start it. In the morning while coffee is being made, I empty it. Because we have 3 dogs and 4 cats, we sweep daily. Once a week I sweep under the furniture (can get a full dog worth of hair that way) and mop the floors-we don't have carpeting, so it is easier to keep up with the fur. I use the master bathroom-DH uses the main bath-so he is motivated to keep it clean because his customers occasionally need to use the bathroom! My bathroom is neat because I'm so obsessive about organizing-baskets or holders for everything-and I group like for like. I HATE cords hanging around, so I make sure to put appliances away in their baskets when I'm done. I set up a mail station in our garage (where we enter from). DH puts it in a basket, and I sort it right there when I come home from work. There's a recycle bin next to the kitchen door-items I don't need to shred go in there immediately, the rest into my office where they're either shredded right away or put into the bill organizer (also labled action needed, not paid yet, to read, to file). Once paid, they're shredded (I pay on line so I can track it thru my bank). I will admit that I am horrible at filing-so I have a cute picnic basket that I use to hold things that will need to be filed. I keep receipts in another basket and every couple months I sort thru it for filing or tossing. I dust as infrequently as I possibly can-I DETEST dusting. When i see too many cobwebs is when I dust. Lol. Same with window washing-just doesn't get done. Our biggest problem is the kitchen table-it tends to be my dumping ground/staging area. So I bought myself some little handled tubs that I sort thing in to and every couple days I bring the tubs to the appropriate places and put the stuff away. I also keep a basket on the kitchen counter next to the door for things that go outside or that I need to put in my truck. I'd love to say that I live in a model home-but the reality is that I live with a slob husband and a lot of shedding creatures. But I can honestly say that my house is at least presentable. You might trip over a few pairs of shoes or see coats draped over chairs (my pet peeve) but I'm never embarrassed to have drop in guests....See MoreWhere do you keep your cleaning supplies?
Comments (31)I'm still working on my organization and even the type of cleaners that I use regularly. I also very much wish to purge much of the "cleaners and cleansers" stuff that I have. I still have 3 packed boxes from my move (U-Haul smalls) with everything from sifter refills to cat deoderizers in them. Much of this stuff I don't use anymore. For instance I don't have the swifter anymore, but I have refills for it :( I find that my "main stuff" is: 1) a bottle of Green Apple Lysol spray cleaner. I use this almost everywhere. 2) a bottle of no-drip Windex. Windows, mirrors, glass. 3) dishwasher detergent 4) hardwood floor cleaner in a spray bottle. I had hardwood floors installed in my new home and this is essential. Don't know what the stuff really is. Probably something "common", but I got it since it was recommended my floorer. I use the microfiber pads that attach to a mop thingee and have several of them. I've gone thru a few and have to put all of this stuff into a "rags" load of laundry. Haven't yet. I also use just clean whites rags and often just paper towels with this stuff too for wiping up spills that happen on the hardwood floors. 5) a sprayer bottle that I keep a mixture of water and clear dish soap. I use this for most spills and spot treatments on my carpets or rugs. For most things this is all I need. Anything more complicated I wick up the spill with clean cotton rags and use the soap mixture and then call Coit for same day service. Okay I'm lame, but I don't like messing up my carpet. A whole cup of full strength espresso got spilled on my carpet at my old condo and while I got a lot out, Coit (a professional carpet cleaner) got most out and if I had them in right away I think it would have all gotten out. 6) clorox wipes. I know lazy perhaps. But I find them way too conveinent. I have containers of them all over the house, even one in my car.. 7) Orange-glo "wood cleaner". This is the slimy stuff. I use a clean rag and then desiginate the rag for only this stuff. I use this to dust and shine up all my wood furniture which is just about everything: dining room table, night stand, chest of drawers, telephone stand, end tables, TV tables, etc, etc. And then other stuff that doesn't get used as often, but has gotten used since I've been in my new house: 1) orange soft scrub (has bleach). use this on the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, the bathtub and its tiled walls. 2) stainless steel cleaner that came with my new frig. only used there. works like a charm. I'm too afraid to use anything else on the SS frig. I follow the "directions" on this. Is this a sham to sell this stuff? Would good ole Lysol spray cleaner do the trick? 3) disposable toliet cleaner doohickies. I used to just use jonny mops (oh and when I had multiple baths, one in each) and toliet bowl cleaner. but now I use the wand thing and the disposable thing. I think I have the Scrubbing Bubbles kind right now. That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure there's more. But truely if this is all I really seem to be using, when I get around to emptying those 3 boxes, it means I can just purge them. I guess time to freecycle, or something? I guess these could just be tossed? Or I guess put out on the curb when we have our Annual Cleanup done by the City. But I get the impression that these, some of the stuff at least, is considered "haz waste"? Thanks for any advice :) Cheers, --jans...See MoreKATHY
